Inter Milan are in advanced talks to sign Cedric Soares from Southampton, according to Sky in Italy.

The 27-year-old Portugal international has played 18 Premier League games for the Saints this season but suffered a calf strain in December which ruled him out for most of the month.

Soares returned in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea on January 2, playing 90 minutes, but was benched for Southampton's last two games - back-to-back wins over Leicester and Everton.

The right-back signed for Southampton in 2015 and has made a total of 104 top-flight appearances for the club.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has hinted he plans on trimming his squad in the January transfer window, saying he prefers working with fewer players.

Southampton have already sold Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria, while Wesley Hoedt joined Celta Vigo on loan and Adam Parkes moved to Watford on a free transfer.

Elsewhere, Southampton are among multiple Premier League clubs monitoring exciting Leeds winger Jack Clarke, Sky Sports News understands.

INTER IN SOARES TALKS

Inter Milan are in advanced talks with Southampton over a loan deal for right-back Cedric Soares, Sky Sports News understands.

The two clubs are also discussing the option of a permanent deal being inserted into the loan, which can be triggered in the summer.

Soares has not played under new Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttel, who has preferred youngster Yan Valery.

Southampton right-back Cedric Soares is undergoing a medical at Inter Milan on Friday ahead of joining on an initial loan, Sky Sports News understands.

The two clubs are understood to have agreed a deal that also includes the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

According to Sky in Italy, Inter will pay an initial loan fee in the region of £500,000, and will need to pay the Saints an initial £9.5m to seal the player long-term.

Southampton defender Cedric Soares has joined Inter Milan on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy the player for £9.5m in the summer.

The 27-year-old right-back has played more than 100 games and scored twice since joining the Saints in 2015.

Portugal international Soares' arrival has been prompted by Inter's injury concerns over Sime Vrsaljko, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Inter considered alternatives including Manchester United's Matteo Darmian.
