Man Utd transfer wishlist: Jadon Sancho the tip of the iceberg as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets English talent

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be given control of Manchester United’s transfer plans with Jadon Sancho leading a list of targets including some of English football’s brightest prospects.

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is also on the new Man Utd manager’s wish list as he prepares for his first summer window at Old Trafford, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is considered a cut-price option, given his contract stand-off at Chelsea.

Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another English starlet on Solskjaer’s radar as Ed Woodward plans to back the Norwegian heavily in the market.

United’s priorities are in central defence, midfield and on the right of attack.

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is the long-standing first choice centre back – but United are also monitoring Raphael Varane, who they would be prepared to bid £100m for if he indicates a desire to leave Real Madrid.

Sporting Lisbon’s free-scoring midfielder Bruno Fernandes is also on an extensive list of targets that will be narrowed down in the final weeks of the season.

Solskjaer is determined to avoid the issues endured by his predecessor Jose Mourinho last year, when the former United manager headed into deadline day still hoping to land a world class centre back.

Instead his successor has told Woodward he wants his summer business to be done in time for United’s pre-season tour to Australia and the Far East, which kicks off in Perth on July 13.

“I’d been discussing with Ed and the club my ideas for the future and now they're more or less my decisions to make,” he said.

“United is a club that has money, and that has to be spent in a reasonable way. People who know me, know that I will use that in a good way.

“We have a plan with the club, they have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep. We will not spend money just to spend money.”

Mourinho’s bitter end at United could be dated back to his frustrations during the summer when he failed to bring in a host of defensive targets including Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng.

United’s scouting department were working on this summer’s priorities months before Solskjaer took over on an interim basis in January.

The 46-year-old has spent much of his three months in charge discussing targets for this summer and beyond.

Benfica teenager Joao Felix has impressed United’s recruitment department and is another under consideration.

Solskjaer revealed he has been inundated with players keen to join his Old Trafford revolution,

“There have been so many players that have been written about that we’re interested in so many players’ agents have been in touch with our administration about wanting to come here,” he said. “Hopefully when we’ve decided what we want to do, we’ll get them here.”

Interest in Sancho, Hudson-Odoi, Rice and Wan-Bissaka is evidence of United’s push to recruit emerging talent after Mourinho’s focus on established players like Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sanchez, Alderweireld, Willian and Ivan Perisic – all in their late 20s or above.

Solskjaer has told Woodward his squad is in need of experience, but the willingness to spend upwards of £80m on Sancho points to his commitment to recruiting the best young players in the world.

Hudson-Odoi (above) represents an alternative to Sancho if Borussia Dortmund stand firm over their insistence the 19-year-old is not for sale.

Rice, who is also being monitored by Manchester City could be the long-term successor to Matic.

It remains to be seen if United will move for Wan-Bissaka this summer or wait until Ashley Young becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

United’s decision to appoint Solskjaer at a time when they sit fifth in the table underlines the fact that he will be given time to rebuild the club.

While Champions League qualification remains the target, United very much see their new manager as a long term project.

And he is adamant he can still lure players without the promise of the Champions League next season.

“The Champions League is important for us and for some players it might be, but to play for Man United you know if you sign a contract you're going to be playing in the Champions League,” he said.

“We are now in a great position to get into the Champions League, but that's not decided until probably May 12.”

Man Utd: Six players could leave Old Trafford at end of season
By Simon Stone

BBC Sport

Manchester United could let as many as six players leave this summer as they prepare to back new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the transfer market.

However, their plans are complicated by uncertainty over the futures of Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez.

Solskjaer will decide if Sanchez can go, but the forward's salary may deter potential suitors.

United are in dialogue with Herrera and Mata, who are out of contract at the end of the season.

There is no certainty, though, that agreement will be reached with either player. Indeed, one source has told the BBC that Herrera has already agreed to join Paris St-Germain next season, although this has not been confirmed by either his representatives or the club.

Sanchez has started just five games - with six further substitute appearances - and scored one goal since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho on 19 December.

Yet there are few clubs in the world with the financial means to get anywhere near the salary he currently earns, and it is not immediately obvious which, if any, of them would be interested given his wretched form overall since leaving Arsenal in January 2018.

In Football Leaks material published by Der Spiegel in May 2018, it was claimed Sanchez, whose contract runs to 2022, earns £391,000-a-week, with an additional £75,000 for every game he starts.

It was said the 30-year-old also gets a £1.1m annual fee, along with additional bonuses, the triggers for which are yet to be met.

The departure of half-a-dozen players would represent United's biggest clearout since 2015, when Louis van Gaal let six senior players go, including Angel di Maria, Tom Cleverley and Anders Lindegaard,

One player United are keen to keep is goalkeeper David de Gea - and they believe he wants to stay.

An option on De Gea's contract was triggered in November to keep him at Old Trafford until 2020.

Although there has been no agreement on the former Atletico Madrid man's personal terms, United remain confident of negotiations eventually reaching a successful conclusion.

Manchester United braced for huge summer overhaul as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets five new signings

Manchester United are braced for what is likely to be their biggest summer overhaul for four years as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer embarks on the latest Old Trafford rebuild.

Solskjaer wants as many as five new signings, with a right-back, centre-half and versatile forward in his sights and, depending on the futures of Ander Herrera and Juan Mata, one or two midfielders.

In addition to a significant recruitment drive, with England winger Jadon Sancho and Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka among the targets, Solskjaer is also eager to promote a number of the club’s burgeoning young academy players as part of the rebuilding process.

United are not pursuing a goalkeeper since they have no intention of allowing David de Gea to leave this summer, despite the contract stand-off with the Spaniard that the club remain hopeful of resolving.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of next season but United have so far refused to meet his demands to double his existing £240,000-a-week wages, which would give him parity with the club’s top-earner Alexis Sanchez.

United tend to operate on the loose basis of three signings and three departures during a summer window but there could be more arrivals if Solskjaer manages to trim a squad bloated by players who have become peripheral figures.

There is uncertainty over the futures of as many as eight senior players, including Mata and Herrera, who are both free agents this summer but are demanding more money than the club are willing to pay. Herrera could leave for Paris St-Germain if he fails to take up the offer of a new three-year contract from United.

Antonio Valencia is expected to leave when the club captain’s contract expires at the end of the season and fellow defenders Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo are also likely to depart. It is understood United may listen to offers for Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly if they manage to recruit a pedigree centre-half, with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Kalidou Koulibaly, of Napoli, on the radar.

Sanchez’s future remains in doubt although both the Chile striker and United would have to make significant compromises to facilitate any move, unless a club from China was prepared to take on his £500,000-a-week wages.

Sanchez has three years left to run on his deal and United run the risk of being saddled with the 30-year-old for some time. As well as dealing a blow to their top-four hopes, United’s 2-1 defeat by Wolves on Tuesday – their third in four matches in all competitions – underlined the challenge Solskjaer faces to turn the club around.

Louis van Gaal, the former United manager, made six signings and offloaded eight senior players in the summer of 2015 and, while there are not expected to be that many ins and outs this time around, the club are braced for a busy close season, which will also include the appointment of their first technical director.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the former United manager and Solskjaer’s mentor, favoured a British core to his sides and the Norwegian wants a similar set-up. As well as Sancho, who would cost about £100 million to prise from Borussia Dortmund, and the £40 million-rated Wan-Bissaka, United are monitoring two more England players, West Ham midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

However, Gareth Bale, the Real Madrid and Wales forward, is not believed to figure in United’s thoughts. United have also been linked with Bruno Fernandes and Saul Niguez, the Sporting Lisbon and Atletico Madrid midfielders, as well as Benfica forward Joao Felix and Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.

Man Utd transfer targets will cost well over £200m as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward revamp squad

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to embark on Manchester United’s biggest squad overhaul in five years.

The Norwegian will be given the backing to stamp his imprint on the club this summer, with as many as five new signings and potentially more players heading for the exit.

Man Utd accept their preferred transfer model of three in, three out will have to be extended in Solskjaer’s first summer window.

It is increasingly likely their new manager will recruit two central midfielders to replace the departed Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, who is nearing a move to Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

Juan Mata is also out of contract and yet to agree a new deal, while Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo are all expected to move on.

There also remain doubts over the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Eric Bailly – with Solskjaer being given the freedom to make the call on who stays and who goes.

Jadon Sancho leads his wanted list, with a right winger considered a priority, while Kalidou Koulibaly is the long-standing first choice target in central defence.

A host of England’s rising stars, including Callum Hudson-Odoi, Declan Rice and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are also on an extensive list players identified by Solskjaer and United’s recruitment department as fitting the profile of how he wants to shape his team.

Sporting Lisbon’s free-scoring midfielder Bruno Fernandes is under consideration, while United are monitoring Raphael Varane’s situation at Real Madrid.

Ed Woodward has already discussed transfer strategy with Solskjaer – and it is likely to require a budget well in excess of £200m to achieve their ambitions.

United anticipate a summer as busy as Louis van Gaal’s first at the club when he brought in Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind.

A raft of departures included Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez.

Solskjaer accepts United need improvements in every department to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool – and informed Woodward of as much even during his outstanding run as interim manager.

Three defeats in their last four games has been a truer reflection of the task ahead of him and the limitations of the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho.

As revealed by Standard Sport, United are not ready to give up on Sanchez and have so far been resistant to suggestions of potential swap deals involving the Chilean.

United have refused to meet Herrera’s wage demands and the Spaniard is understood to be seriously considering a move to PSG.

It will take a compromise on his part to ensure his five-year spell at Old Trafford does not end this summer.

David de Gea is still to agree a new contract, but the club will resist any bids for their goalkeeper this summer, even as he enters the final 12 months .

United have settled on a preference for young British talent, Mike Phelan's preference is to reboot the recruitment policy & avoid the 'superstar' strategy the club have relied on during Ed Woodward's tenure, Solskjær is said to have been in agreement with this. [men]
