Dubai Newcastle United takeover talk look serious, but Mike Ashley's next move is what matters now
Newcastle United has been the subject of takeover speculation in recent weeks and the latest reports suggest change is on the way

As ever at Newcastle United over the past decade, it all now rests on Mike Ashley’s broad shoulders.

As we moved into the early hours of the Bank Holiday Monday there seemed mounting evidence that Newcastle are the subject of serious interest from Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Emirati Royal Family who was keen on buying Liverpool last year. Newcastle’s non-committal response, which sign posts that there is more to the tale than mere guesswork, adds to the intrigue.

To those who have kept their ear to the ground on the takeover front, it is no surprise that we arrive at this point again. Two months ago Dave Kitson said a deal had already been agreed and he was merely openly stating what plenty have said behind closed doors.

Just last week an intermediary close to the buying process claimed “serious and credible” interest from “serious people” and there has been a spike in interest of late. Enquiries from Mexico, Dubai and America have been mentioned – one group was understood to be in the data room as the season reached its conclusion.

But this talk is nothing new and cynicism – largely through Peter Kenyon’s talked up but ultimately substance-free offer – has been the default reaction.

What is different this time? Well we await verification. Attempts to reach out to the Premier League have been hampered by the timeframe; Newcastle’s response isn’t committing either way. Dubai’s working day starts in a few hours, so watch this space for on-the-record talk.

And we need to fill in the gaps here. The personal wealth of Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is not known but his Bin Zayed Group commands serious funds. He has been claimed to be a billionaire and the original Sun report claimed funds would be made available to the club, while other reports suggested retaining Rafa Benitez is the priority.

A word of caution. Press Association reported last year that the reported Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan offer for Liverpool “did not get past the vetting stage because it was deemed neither credible nor worthy of being put to the ownership”. But that was a £2billion bid and required outside funding of £750million to top it up. United would only cost £350million - and is the Sheikh has access to over a £1billion to buy a football club, it suggests he has serious backing.

And Newcastle have set up an internal due diligence process since the Kenyon fiasco and if he has got beyond that, providing funds should not be a problem.

He will need to be prepared to spend. One person who has led attempts to buy Newcastle said anyone brokering a deal for the club will need £500million to get the club up to scratch – and then further funds to take it beyond the top eight of the Premier League. The training ground, stadium and infrastructure all need money spent on them – serious cash at that.

The man who holds the answers is Ashley. We may have established there is interest but what of the Newcastle owner’s intentions? Is he ready to sell? How will he feel about this news coming out in the way it has? Will his PR team move to squash it tomorrow?

It would certainly explain the delays to retaining Benitez. If it is not his job to put a tick or cross next to the manager’s demands he would be a happy man. He did not appear ready to move significantly to pacify the United boss – hence the delay in announcing a new deal. Time is ticking on that June 30 contract expiration: if a takeover is happening, it needs to be a fair way along by then.

Newcastle fans so used to disappointment of late will treat latest developments with caution. A city holds its breath.

Newcastle United: Sheikh Khaled claims to have provided proof of funds to buy club

The investment group in talks to buy Newcastle United says it is "assisting" the Premier League in its fit-and-proper-person test and has provided proof of funds to buy the club.

The Bin Zayed Group, representing UAE billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan, agreed terms with Magpies owner Mike Ashley on Monday.

The group said that a signed document of these terms had now been sent to the Premier League.

The deal is worth a reported £350m.

Sheikh Khaled, a relative of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour, failed with a £2bn takeover of Liverpool last year.

"The proof-of-funds statement was forwarded to Mike Ashley's lawyers on 17 April 2019," the Bin Zayed Group said in a statement.

"The so called fit-and-proper Premier League process is a standard procedure which will take time, and we are doing all we can to assist the Premier League during this process.

"We feel the need to clarify this point in order for the fans and the general public to understand the timelines."

The Premier League and Newcastle declined to comment when contacted by BBC Sport.

Newcastle United takeover: Bin Zayed Group release fresh statement claiming documents have been sent to Premier League
Bin Zayed Group have addressed concerns from fans on their bid to take over at St James' Park

The Bin Zayed Group have issued a new statement regarding their bid to buy Newcastle United.

Sheikh Khaled is in talks with Mike Ashley over a £350million but after a week of questions the group have now responded to the public.

United sources insist they are yet to receive an official bid.

But in a statement from Bin Zayed Group's managing director Midhat Kidwai, he said: "In consideration of the numerous speculations in regards to the timelines of the acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club by Bin Zayed Group, we feel the need to issue this statement.

"Terms have been agreed between us and Mike Ashley; these terms have been reflected in a document, signed by both parties, which has been forwarded to the Premier League.

"The proof of funds statement was forwarded to Mike Ashley’s lawyers on 17 April 2019.

The so called fit-and-proper Premier League process is a standard procedure which will take time, and we are doing all we can to assist the Premier League during this process.

"We feel the need to clarify this point in order for the fans and the general public to understand the timelines."

United boss Rafa Benitez is still to agree his contract extension with the Magpies and it remains unclear if Bin Zayed Group will retain him as boss.

Newcastle United takeover: Mike Ashley remains open to selling Magpies but Bin Zayed Group urged to make their move
After four days of talk, Mike Ashley now wants to see solid progress from Middle East group

Mike Ashley is understood to be waiting for an official bid from Sheikh Khaled to take Newcastle United off his hands.

The Bin Zayed Group have spoken with confidence that a deal can still be struck - but while both United and Sheikh Khaled are on the same wavelength when it comes to the asking price, Ashley stands by to see if he receives the major transaction that would trigger the end of his 12 year tenure.

Despite suggestions that there has been proof of funds shown in the last 24 hours, the overall bid is yet to be tabled and the Premier League have not received the official documentation to get the sale process under way.

Ashley is thought to be concerned that the deal is being played out in the media, something that proved to curtail Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners' interest in buying the club in 2018.

Indeed, caution is very much the watchword from behind the scenes at the moment despite the whirlwind emergence of the Middle East bidders in the last four days.

For all that, Ashley is still very much open to selling but wants to see concrete evidence that the Bin Zayed Group are for real.

The group said on Monday: "We view it as an honour to have the opportunity to build on the strong support, history and tradition of the club. "We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity."

Insiders also insist that there are two other groups who retain an interest in buying the club but despite claims of them being hurried into action, the Bin Zayed Group appear to be leading the way.

With takeover talk dominating the agenda in Newcastle this week it has left Rafa Benitez demanding answers from the current hierarchy.

Managing director Lee Charnley remains in charge of extending his contract and another week has been wasted in terms of securing targets for the 2019/20 season.

Newcastle are yet to comment publicly on either the potential sale or Benitez's future but public pressure is building for answers from boardroom level as the summer threatens to descend into chaos.

While Bin Zayed Group’s Midhat Kidwai says in his statement they’ve agreed to meet the price and are working hard to complete the transaction, we understand NUFC are yet to see proof of funds to meet the £350m asking price. (2019-05-28 08:00)

Sheikh Khaled says he has 'agreed terms' with Mike Ashley to buy Newcastle United
Whirlwind deal has sent Newcastle fans into meltdown on social media but club urge for calm as no deal struck just yet

At 16:36pm this afternoon, a statement landed at Chronicle towers from downtown Dubai.

The contents of the message were clear and simple as group managing director Midhat Kidwai confirmed the news that fans were praying to hear.

In it, His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan rubber-stamped his interest in take Newcastle United off Mike Ashley's hands and attempt to take the club to the next level.

There's no deal struck just yet, but this is as bold and concrete as you could wish for as a Newcastle supporter.

On behalf of Sheikh Khaled it read: "In response to the numerous reports in the world media this morning, we would like to comment as follows.

"We can confirm that representatives of His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team, about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club.

"We view it as an honor to have the opportunity to build on the strong support, history and tradition of the club.

"We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity."

So the situation is now firmly in Ashley's hands and it will boil down to whether he first accepts the bid and then whether he is convinced that Sheikh Khaled can take United to the next level.

What happens next?
The talks continue with Ashley and his people between Sheikh Khaled but the Toon owner's lawyers are currently processing what has been a whirlwind move from the Dubai-based group.

How long could it take?
Sheikh Khaled will still have to get through a Premier League Owner and Director's test but they are pushing hard and trying to get a quick sale.

What are the Premier League saying?
Top-flight bosses are fully up to speed with developments but are offering a "no comment" status.

What has Ashley said about this?
The Toon owner has said nothing on the record.

His advisors have informed us the situation is genuine but NUFC have issued nothing but a "no comment" response to enquires

Does Rafa Benitez know and will he stay?
Benitez is well aware of the latest revelations but there have been no steers either way on who would be first team boss so far.

Getting the deal done is the main priority.

But Benitez is well known enough in football to be the prime candidate and is a global brand himself so it could be a great match.

#nufc say the statement from Bin Zayed Group is genuine but refuse to comment further.

Statement has also been sent to the Chronicle: "We can confirm that representatives of His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team, about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club." #nufc

So an official confirmation from both ends that the talks are real. Although the Bin Zayed Group state they are yet to complete the "transaction", the statement goes on: "We have agreed on terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity."
