Kieran Trippier travels to Spain to complete £20m move from Tottenham to Atletico MadridKieran Trippier has travelled to Spain to complete a £20million move from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid.
Spurs have given Trippier permission to hold talks with Atletico ahead of a medical and excused him from having to travel to Asia for the club’s pre-season tour.
Tottenham fly to Singapore on Wednesday, but Trippier is not expected to be on the flight with a move to Atletico expected to go through.
Juventus and Napoli had both weighed up moves for 28-year-old Trippier this summer, but Atletico jumped to the front of the queue over the last couple of days.
Atletico want a right-back to replace Juanfran and had made enquiries over Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin before turning to Trippier.Selling Trippier would leave manager Mauricio Pochettino with Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters, while Juan Foyth can also fill in at right-back.
Whether or not Tottenham would try to replace Trippier remains to be seen, but the club are hopeful of signing left-back Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham.Trippier admitted to suffering a difficult season, following his outstanding World Cup performances for England last summer.
He was left out of Gareth Southgate’s Nations League squad, but remains determined to try to win his England place back.
Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld, who have both been linked with moves away from Tottenham this summer, are expected to fly to Asia unless a bid quickly materialises for either player.
Eriksen has admitted that he would be open to leaving Spurs, but neither Real Madrid nor Juventus have followed up their interest with a firm bid as yet.
Alderweireld can leave for £25m until July 26, due to a clause in his contract, but the Belgian is yet to receive an offer from elsewhere.
Darren Bent was famously pulled off the plane as Tottenham prepared to go on pre-season tour in 2009, when Sunderland made a bid to sign the striker.
