Rafa Benitez was informed of his Newcastle exit by a FRIEND while at his Wirral home as club did not contact him before releasing statement
  • Rafa Benitez will officially leave his post as Newcastle manager on Sunday
  • The Spaniard failed to agree a new contract with the club's owner Mike Ashley
  • Ashley made his decision following a heated email exchange between the pair
  • Benitez had not been expecting Ashley to issue a statement on Monday

Rafa Benitez did not know Newcastle United had announced his departure on Monday after Mike Ashley reacted to an email in which the manager said he could see no way forward.

Sportsmail understands Benitez's last correspondence with the club had been an email in which he had outlined his frustration with negotiations over a contract extension. The Spaniard wanted the promise of more investment, greater control and an improvement on his £6million-per-year salary.

However, he was not expecting Ashley to issue a statement confirming their parting at lunchtime on Monday and he was only informed by a friend while at home on the Wirral.

Sources close to the 59-year-old say he is 'angry, upset and disappointed' by an outcome that will see him leave a club where he was worshipped by supporters, many of whom are now threatening to boycott St James' Park.

Benitez's deal expires on Sunday and he had thought the club could yet return with a last-minute offer to persuade him to stay, even if he had given up hope on that being enough.

Club sources say Benitez was not answering his phone last week and Ashley has now issued the instruction to begin the search for a new manager immediately. Managing director Lee Charnley has been tasked with delivering the new man within the next fortnight.

Benitez, meanwhile, has the offer of a £12million salary from Chinese club Dalian Yifang, but sources say he will explore all options. There is caution that a move to China could diminish his reputation among Europe's top clubs.

We understand he would be open to discussions with Chelsea were their pursuit of Frank Lampard to fail. Benitez won the Europa League during an interim period with the Blues in 2013 and has a good relationship with owner Roman Abramovich.

As for Newcastle, they were only drawing up a shortlist on Monday night and it is likely that Neil Redfearn will take first-team training when the squad returns on July 4, even though he was only appointed Under-23s boss last week.

Jose Mourinho is the market leader but he is unlikely to work within the financial parameters which Benitez refused to, while Arsene Wenger was being mentioned as an ambitious target by some close to the club on Monday night.

Of managers currently in employment, Burnley's Sean Dyche has been mooted by those same sources given his resilience and personality to take on what will be a difficult job in the wake of the popular Benitez.

Meanwhile, a proposed takeover of the club by the Dubai-based Bin Zayed Group has shown no signs of progress and prospective candidates will be told not to consider that as a distraction for the time being.

Rafael Benitez: Newcastle did not share my vision, says former manager

Former Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez says the club "did not share his vision" as he outlined for the first time his reasons for leaving.

The Spaniard, whose contract expired on Sunday, said he felt like he "belonged" at the club and wanted to stay.

But Benitez, 59, indicated he wanted a longer-term deal, rather than just a contract extension.

"It became increasingly clear to me that those at the top of the club did not share the same vision," he said.

Benitez exit - what next for Newcastle?

The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League in May as Benitez, who took over in March 2016, secured the club's top-flight status.

"I wanted to stay, but I didn't just want to sign an extended contract, I wanted to be part of a project," said Benitez in a letter to fans.

"I'm very sad about that, but I do not regret for one moment my decision to come to Tyneside and I'm very proud about what we achieved together."

Newcastle appointed Benitez as successor to Steve McClaren with 10 games of the 2015-16 campaign remaining, as the club were placed one point from a position of Premier League safety.

The former Valencia, Liverpool and Real Madrid boss could not prevent the club from being relegated but they won the 2016-17 Championship title to secure an immediate return.

There was speculation about Benitez's future prior to the club announcing his departure, as he received a £12m-a-year offer to take over as manager at Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang.

His coaching staff of Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gomez Perez and Mikel Antia have also left.

Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta is the current bookmakers' favourite to take over at Newcastle, with Garry Monk, David Moyes and Roberto Martinez among others linked with the job.

Sam Allardyce snubs Newcastle after Toon made shock approach for former boss as Magpies target Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce

- Newcastle United offered Sam Allardyce a surprise return as manager last week
- Mike Ashley is understood to have identified him as replacement for Rafa Benitez
- But there was an issue over the club's recruitment policy and talks collapsed
- Newcastle appear focused on recruiting Steve Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday

By MATT LAWTON FOR THE DAILY MAIL

Newcastle United offered Sam Allardyce a surprise return as manager last week, Sportsmail can reveal, but the former England boss has rejected the opportunity.

Owner Mike Ashley is understood to have identified the 64-year-old as a replacement for Rafa Benitez, not just because of his track record as a Premier League manager but because he would not cost any money in compensation.

Sources close to the club say Allardyce, who has been out of work since leaving Everton in May last year, was presented with an offer after talks between senior figures at St James' Park and his representatives last weekend.

But there was an issue over the club's recruitment policy and a concern that Allardyce would have little if any say over signings. As a consequence talks collapsed and Newcastle now appear focused on recruiting Steve Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday.

Allardyce became Newcastle boss in May 2007, eight days before Ashley's takeover, and was sacked eight months later when the new owner moved to bring Kevin Keegan back to the club.

It is understood that Allardyce would have brought in former Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan as his assistant.

Bruce, 58, is understood to be at the top of Newcastle's shortlist, with formal contact expected to be imminent ahead of their Premier League Asia Trophy trip to China on Saturday.

It is believed compensation of somewhere in the region of £1million would have to be paid to secure the services of the former Manchester United captain, who was born in Corbridge, 15 miles from Newcastle.

Allardyce's appointment would have raised the tension that exists between Ashley and the club's fans following the departure of the popular Benitez.

While Allardyce made a strong start, securing five wins and two draws from his first nine Premier League matches, a poor run at Christmas and growing discontent among some supporters invited Ashley to endear himself to the fans by bringing back Keegan.

But Bruce is not winning any popularity contests in Newcastle either as a former Sunderland manager, with some fans calling for a boycott of the opening fixture of the Premier League season against Arsenal at St James' on August 11.

It is a difficult job for whoever takes over given the departure of leading scorer Ayoze Perez, strike partner Salomon Rondon, midfielder Mohamed Diame and loan signings Kenedy and Antonio Barreca.

On Wednesday Bruce played down the rumours when asked about them at pre-season training camp in Portugal.

He told the Sheffield Star: 'It's news to me. God only knows what happened on Tuesday afternoon. There seemed to be an upsurge [in the betting] from somewhere. John Terry was favourite yesterday. It was Mikel Arteta the day before, so who knows?

'As far as I am concerned, I am here, I am going home tomorrow and looking forward to walking the dog.'

Bruce was appointed by Wednesday in February, four months after leaving Aston Villa.

Sam Allardyce says he turned down chance to take vacant Newcastle job
• Allardyce: ‘I was considered but it’s that thing … don’t go back’
• Steve Bruce believed to be at top of Magpies’ shortlist

Sam Allardyce has said he turned down the chance to take the vacant manager’s job at Newcastle. The former England manager, who held the position at St James’ Park from 2007 until 2008, was under consideration to replace Rafael Benítez, who left the club at the end of June.

However, Allardyce told TalkSport: “I was very flattered that I was considered but it’s that thing … ‘don’t go back.’

“It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn’t for me. I politely said ‘no’. I never got to talk to Mike [Ashley, owner of the club]. My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much.

“It’s not for me. Maybe if it was the first time around I would have jumped at it. I appreciate the offer but I was surprised, I’ve not worked for a full season.”

Allardyce continued: “It wasn’t something I thought about for too long. I thought it’d be better to make a quick decision for everyone. We’re in pre-season now and they’re back in training.”

Steve Bruce is believed to be at the top of the Magpies’ shortlist and formal contact with the 58-year-old Sheffield Wednesday boss is expected this week.

Allardyce believes Bruce would love to be offered the position, adding: “If he gets offered the job I’ll think he’ll jump at the chance. I think it would be one of his dreams to manage his hometown club.”

On his previous stint on Tyneside, Allardyce explained: “It wasn’t pleasant in the end but it was in the middle of the takeover. I had a fabulous start but we were desperate for better players. I was trying to forge forward and they wanted to go in another direction and I have no problems with that. It was handled brilliantly by Mike and his staff at the time.

“The fans are a bit more tolerant now. They were very good with Rafa because there’s not as much money as other clubs have got and were a bit more patient. The transfer market is the hardest part of the job at the moment and getting the right players to go to Newcastle, listening to what Rafa said before, has been a tough job.”

Allardyce is not ruling out a return to Premier League management but maintains the job has to be right for him. The 64-year-old, whose last top-flight job – at Everton – ended in May 2018, added: “I wouldn’t rule it out but the offer that attracts me may not come now. Before I’d [be] ‘I’ll come and try to save you, can I do something here, yeah, let’s go’.

“But what happened at Everton really did disappoint me. This was supposed to be taking the club forward and I never got that chance – and that still rankles with me.”

Exclusive: Newcastle poised to appoint Steve Bruce as manager and hope he will join squad in China next week

Newcastle United are set to appoint Steve Bruce as manager and are hoping he will be able to join up with the team on their pre-season tour of China.

Sources at St James’ Park have indicated to Telegraph Sport that, barring any last-minute hitches, Bruce will be announced as Rafa Benitez’s replacement before the weekend.

It remains to be seen whether Bruce will be able to go on Newcastle’s pre-season trip to the Far East because of visa issues but if he can agree personal terms, the club will endeavour to ensure he is able to meet the players for the first time in China next week.

Newcastle, whose interest in Bruce was revealed by Telegraph Sport immediately after Benitez's departure was confirmed a fortnight ago, are still discussing compensation with Sheffield Wednesday regarding the release of the former Manchester United captain.

But the 58-year-old wants the job and feels he cannot resist the lure of the challenge on Tyneside.

A boyhood Newcastle fan, it is the job his parents, who died last year, always wanted Bruce to take and although he will walk into the eye of a storm on Tyneside he is ready to accept the criticism that will follow his appointment. Bruce alos spent two years with bitter rivals Sunderland between 2009-11.

Newcastle need to move swiftly following the departure of Benitez as they are yet to sign a player in this transfer window and need a manager in place before that can start.

Bruce’s arrival will be seen as underwhelming choice by many supporters still angry at the failure to keep Benitez, who decided not to sign a contract extension in order to accept a £12m-a-year role in China with Dalian Yifang.

The animosity caused by Benitez’s exit has created a toxic atmosphere on Tyneside with a coalition of supporter groups urging fans to boycott the club’s opening Premier League game of the season against Arsenal.

Bruce has been warned about what he will face if he takes the job and the amount of opposition he will face from disgruntled supporters, but has not been deterred, with those close to the vastly experienced manager insisting he still felt it was an offer he could not refuse.

Bruce turned down the Newcastle job twice when he was at Birmingham City, the second offer made behind the back of his friend Sir Bobby Robson when he was still in charge at St James’ Park.

Newcastle looked at several other candidates, including Manchester City assistant manager Mikel Arteta and Nice coach Patrick Vieira, although Bruce is the only person to have been officially offered the job, despite claims from Sam Allardyce that he turned it down.

Allardyce, who was in charge at St James’ Park from 2007 to 2008, told Talksport: “I was very flattered that I was considered but it’s that thing – don’t go back.

“It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn’t for me. I politely said ‘no’.

“I never got to talk to Mike [Ashley]. My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much.

“It’s not for me. Maybe if it was the first time around, I would have jumped at it. I appreciate the offer but I was surprised, I’ve not worked for a full season.”

Allardyce believed Bruce would love to be offered the position, adding: “If he gets offered the job I think he’ll jump at the chance.

“I think it would be one of his dreams to manage his hometown club.”
