Richarlison on verge of signing new five-year deal with Everton Everton striker Richarlison is expected to sign a new contract before Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby after agreeing terms on a five-year deal. Marcel Brands, director of football at Everton, announced on Friday talks were advanced on extending the Brazilian’s current agreement until 2024. With negotiations successful, confirmation could come as soon as today. Manager Marco Silva will hold his pre-match press conference this afternoon. The 22-year-old joined from Watford 18 months ago and has proved to be one of the more successful recruits in a difficult period of Everton history.
Since moving to Merseyside for £40 million he has broken into the Brazil national team and become the most potent and regular goal threat for Silva.
The coach will need to see more of the same in his latest career-defining fixture, Everton making the short journey to Anfield with Silva’s position under review on a game-to-game basis.
After surviving the calamitous defeat to Norwich City last weekend, Silva could at least take positives from the loss to Leicester City on Sunday, despite the deflating nature of it.
It was a defeat which exposed how many of Everton’s problems are not of the manager’s making –his side succumbing due to a lack of cutting edge when comfortable in the game and creating attacking opportunities, and a fragile spine when pressure inevitably increased on his defence with the improving opponent chasing a goal in the closing stages. It has been a recurring theme of Silva's reign.
Everton went into this season in dire need of a powerful target man and skilled central defender. That they secured neither is not Silva’s fault, and it is the acceptance of that joint-accountability by the board which partially explains the reluctance to make him the scapegoat.
Unfortunately for Silva, events may yet conspire against him even more if a similarly commendable performance as that at Leicester does not transpire at Anfield, particularly as so many supporters have lost patience.
Silva desperately needs his side to perform to allow him to return to Goodison Park in charge for the weekend visit of Chelsea.
