Wales forward Gareth Bale says he would be open to a return to the Premier League - but Real Madrid are making it "difficult" for him to leave.

Frustrated by a lack of playing time, Bale came close to a move to China last year before Real blocked the move.

Other clubs are interested in signing the 31-year-old but his agent has said previously Bale is "going nowhere".

"I tried to leave last year but they [Real Madrid] blocked everything at the last second," Bale told Sky Sports.

"It was a project I was excited for last year but it didn't materialise. And there have been other instances but the club won't allow it or something, so it's up to the club.

"I want to play football. I'm still motivated to play football. I'm 31 but I'm in great shape still and I feel I've got a lot to give.

"We'll see what happens. It's in the club's hands and they make things very difficult to be honest."

Asked if he would like to return to the Premier League, the former Tottenham player said: "It's not really in my hands. If those options arise, it's something I'd look at for sure."

Bale is with the Wales squad in Helsinki as they prepare for Thursday's Nations League match against Finland.

He became the world's most expensive player when he joined Real Madrid from Spurs for £85m in 2013.

The Welshman enjoyed great success in his first five years at the Bernabeu, scoring more than 100 goals and winning four Champions League titles.

But his star has faded in the past couple of seasons after a run of injuries, indifferent form and a scarcity of first-team opportunities.

Bale started just one match when the 2019-20 La Liga season resumed, playing a mere 100 minutes as Real clinched a first title since 2017.

But Bale was conspicuously on the fringes of the team's celebrations, his interaction with team-mates awkward and his ever-diminishing relationship with manager Zinedine Zidane frostier than ever.

Zidane said it would have been "best for everyone" had Bale left last year, and his departure would have benefitted the club financially.

Bale is still Real Madrid's highest-paid player with his current contract, which does not expire until 2022, thought to be worth around £600,000 per week.

That limits the number of clubs who could afford to sign him from Real, although his former club Spurs and Manchester United are among those who have long been linked to the former Southampton player.

"We'll see what happens," said Bale.

"We have plenty of time in this transfer window and a couple of others as well.

"Time will tell and, mainly, the decision is in Real Madrid's hands."

Tottenham have opened talks with Real Madrid about a loan return for Gareth Bale. Their interest comes as Manchester United also consider a loan for the Wales international as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

Spurs want to explore what may be possible but there is a caveat. Bale earns a basic £600,000 a week and sources close to him have said he would be unwilling to take a pay cut. “Gareth still loves Spurs,” his agent Jonathan Barnett told the BBC. “It’s where he wants to be.”

The 31-year-old had six seasons at Spurs before his then world-record £85.2m transfer to Real and the club’s chairman, Daniel Levy, would love to bring him back. Bale said at the beginning of the month that he would be open to a Premier League return. It is unclear, however, whether the Spurs manager, José Mourinho, would want Bale as much as Levy and then there are the numbers, which are extremely daunting.

United are on a different level to Spurs in financial terms and, if needed, they could find a way to accommodate Bale. But Spurs – who Levy expects to lose £200m in 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic – would need a lot of things to fall into place, not least Real paying a high percentage of Bale’s wages. The Spanish champions are agreeable to making a contribution given how Bale’s fortunes have nosedived under Zinedine Zidane. How much remains to be seen.

Bale almost joined the Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning on a £1m-a-week, three-year deal last year only to be upset when Real blocked the transfer. He has said he “wants to play football” and is “still motivated to play football”. But he is settled off the field in Madrid and would not walk away from his life there lightly.

United have chased the Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho throughout the summer only to be frustrated by his club’s £110m valuation. Although United are not ready to give up on Sancho, they could turn to Bale, who has no future at Real while Zidane is the manager. It is conceivable that United’s interest in Bale, who is under contract until June 2022, is a means of putting pressure on Dortmund over Sancho.

United’s bid to sign Sancho has turned into a saga. They have agreed terms with the 20-year-old and made a breakthrough regarding agent fees but their stance remains that Dortmund’s asking price is too high in the Covid-affected market.

There are three weeks to go until the transfer window closes and, although there is the chance of agreeing a deal with Dortmund, United have no desire to be negotiating in the final days of the market. As such, they would be prepared to walk away before then, meaning Bale could become an option.

Where Bale is concerned, a loan looks likeliest at the moment, although a permanent transfer has not been ruled out with Real keen to recover costs as they look to offload their highest earner.

Bale's salary is perhaps the biggest hurdle for Spurs to overcome - he still has two years left on a contract which is thought to be worth about £600,000 a week.

United have long been linked with the Welshman, and he had been seen as a potential target should they fail to sign England international Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham, however, have an emotional pull for a player they signed as a 17-year-old from Southampton and helped develop into one of the world's best.
