FERGUSON HINTS AT MAN UTD EXITS

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted at the summer exits of some senior Manchester United players.

Ferguson has not completely given up on landing a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

However, the Scot does accept his side are in need of improbable assistance from neighbours Wigan and the situation looks "bleak".

Yet even if United somehow overturn the odds and become the first team to win four consecutive championships, Ferguson feels changes in personnel are inevitable.

"You have to take a decision about where we can improve the team," Ferguson told MUTV.

"When you are challenging for four trophies it can have a draining effect. You have to be aware of that and spot the moment when it is time to freshen up one or two players.

"It is not a desire to do it but you need to do it because the demands and pressures on players can, over time, be quite exacting."

Wayne Rooney will certainly be part of United's future.

The impact he has made at Old Trafford this season was confirmed at the club's annual player of the year awards as he lifted the three major prizes; fans and players' player of the year, plus the best goal.

"It was my best hat-trick," reflected Rooney, who will go into the final game with 34 goals to his name but knowing it should never have come to this.

"It has probably been the hardest Premier League. All the teams have lost games.

"If we could have been more consistent we would have won it.

"We shouldn't be losing seven games, even if other teams have dropped points as well."

Meanwhile, Ferguson will not torture himself by wondering where it went wrong if Manchester United fail to land a record fourth title on the trot.

Currently a single point adrift, there are a number of obvious points where the gap could have been made up.

"I used to look at every game but you can torture yourself with that," he told MUTV.

"We lost at Burnley at the start of the season. That was three points and we also missed a penalty. If we had scored that we might have won or at least got a draw that might have made a difference.

"We had a couple of refereeing decision against Chelsea. You could look at all things.

"You can twist and torture yourself but it happens. We get breaks ourselves sometimes."

Ferguson set to axe Manchester United players

Sir Alex Ferguson has announced plans to allow "one or two" players to leave Manchester United at the end of the season to freshen up the squad.

United look set to miss out on a fourth consecutive Premier League title as they go into the final weekend a point behind Chelsea, and their Champions League hopes ended with a quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich.

Many believe United need to add new options in attack, with Dimitar Berbatov in particular coming under fire. Ferguson has repeatedly defended the £30.75 million signing from Tottenham, but he was unhappy with his team's "careless" finishing at Sunderland this weekend and added: "Dimitar could have scored four."

Ferguson has not named any of the players he expects to move on this summer but Berbatov appears to be one of the candidates as the manager attempts to freshen up his team.

"You have to take a decision about where we can improve the team," he told MUTV. "When you are challenging for four trophies, it can have a draining effect.

"You have to be aware of that and spot the moment when it is time to freshen up one or two players. It is not a desire to do it but you need to do it because the demands and pressures on players can, over time, be quite exacting."

Ferguson believes, however, that there is already a wealth of young talent available for next season and suggested that major changes will not be necessary.

"People don't recognise that we've signed three players for £20 million already," he said. "Young Chris Smalling from Fulham has signed for us, Mame Diouf has done well, and Javier Hernandez from Mexico will join us after the World Cup.

"Those are three young players whose futures are guaranteed at this club. There are others who come into that bracket like Jonny Evans, Federico Macheda, Gabriel Obertan, Danny Welbeck and Darron Gibson, so we have a good nucleus and foundation of players who can carry the club for a long time."

Ferguson's comments come after United chief executive David Gill's confirmation that they are already in the process of planning further arrivals.

"I can look you in the eye and tell you straight that we have the transfer funds available to the manager," he told the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association magazine. "Targets have been discussed already, but it's not our style to talk about names and it never will be."

Ben Foster bye bye

FOSTER RESIGNED TO OLD TRAFFORD EXIT

Ben Foster has accepted he will have to leave Manchester United to revive his flagging career.

Foster started the campaign with high hopes of becoming United's number one goalkeeper.

Sir Alex Ferguson felt confident enough about his progress to proclaim his belief that the former Stoke man would go to the World Cup as England's number one as well.

But the season has turned into a disaster for the 27-year-old.

Given first crack at filling the void created by a pre-season injury to Edwin van der Sar, Foster made two high-profile blunders, first in the Manchester derby, when United were only rescued thanks to Michael Owen's dramatic late winner in the sixth minute of injury time, then the following month against Sunderland when he was at fault for a Kenwyne Jones goal that proved crucial in the title race.

Although Fabio Capello did not lose faith, and picked Foster for successive internationals against Belarus and Brazil, the goalkeeper chose to highlight the discrepancy of a career that saw him installed as number one for his country yet fall to number three for his club, and since then he has been frozen out.

On Monday he was reduced to becoming a penalty shoot-out hero in United's reserve team title triumph over Aston Villa.

And, while Foster accepts any move away from Old Trafford is a step down, he knows it is inevitable.

"You never want to leave Manchester United," he told the Manchester Evening News. "If you leave this club you are only ever going to go down.

"But I want to be playing football. I am not interested in just hanging around and I would go if the club wanted to sell me.

"If they are happy to accept a bid then you have to read between the lines and realise you are not really needed and move on. It would not be the end of the world for me."

Ferguson has said he sees Foster being part of his first-team squad next season.

That looks to be highly unlikely though, with the possibility of a loan move on the agenda, possibly to Birmingham if, as expected, they are not able to get Joe Hart back from Manchester City.

Foster knows he will lose out to Hart in the battle to secure a World Cup spot, with David James and Robert Green also set to make the trip to South Africa.

"I don't think there is any chance of South Africa now," he said. "If he were to pick me it would be very unfair on some of the other goalkeepers.

"I have not played a first-team game for a good few months and some of the English lads out there like Joe Hart and Robert Green have been doing fantastic."
