Beckham in line for coaching role
David Beckham will be handed a World Cup coaching role with England, as long as he proves that he is recuperating well from the Achilles injury that has prevented him playing at the finals.
Beckham has been ruled out of playing until November at the earliest, but as soon as he ruptured his Achilles, England coach Fabio Capello invited him to be part of the backroom staff in South Africa.
However, any position is dependent on Beckham being in an advanced stage of rehabilitation and he will need to pass a fitness test to prove that he can aid Capello and his coaching staff, rather than be a distraction.
A Football Association insider told Soccernet: "There is no doubt we would like David Beckham with the England squad, providing he can be helpful to us. Fabio Capello sees David Beckham as part of the coaching staff, but he would need to help England's cause, not the England camp having to look after him - that wouldn't work
"David can be very useful in the dressing room and on the training pitch but we shall need to take advice from his specialist and make a full assessment of whether he will be able to be with us in South Africa."
The Capello camp will be focusing on the England preliminary squad announcement on Tuesday, but will turn their attentions to Beckham within 24 hours, though a decision does not have to be taken immediately. If there is hope that Beckham will be able to join the squad in South Africa, then Capello will give him every chance to make it.
