Labour have failed to take another target seat. This time its North Warwickshire. The Conservatives won the seat from then Labour minister Mike O'Brien, but only just with a majority of 54. Mr O'Brien had hoped to win that seat back but Craig Tracey has increased his majority to 2,973 - a swing of 3.1% away from Labour to the Conservatives. If this trend continues Labour could have a very bad night

Laura Kuenssberg Chief correspondent, Newsnight Posted at 04:01 A source in the Labour Party has just texted me to say, "the leadership contest starts tomorrow". Another has told me, "they want Ed M gone by Monday and a blood-letting leadership battle ASAP".

Ashdown 'to eat hat' Posted at 07:00 Lord Ashdown has told BBC Somerset it's been a "bitter, painful and cruel" night for the Liberal Democrats. He also accepts that he "now has to eat his hat" after making what turned out to be a bit of a rash wager just after the exit poll came in last night. We'll bring you pictures of Lord Ashdown eating said hat as soon as he does it.

David Cameron is going to be prime minister and it looks like he'll be able to govern on his own without having to do a deal with any other party. This will make it easier for him to suggest legislation, but it will be harder to get through.
The SNP has swept Scotland, and become the third party at Westminster, which will immediately change the complexion of Parliament and put pressure on the Union.
Labour has had a terrible night, not just losing Scotland, but failing to make any kind of progress in the places they desperately needed to.
Ed Miliband is very likely to have to resign, and soon.
The results are worse than the Lib Dems ever imagined - losing seats by the dozen, nearly all of their big names.
It looks likely that Nick Clegg will stand down as leader by the end of the day.
