Arsenal 'identify Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno as a top summer target'
Leno has spent the past seven years at Bayer Leverkusen but the Bundesliga side expect the stopper to move on



Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper has reportedly emerged as a target for Arsenal.

The German is allegedly one of Unai Emery's top transfer targets as the Spaniard bids to put his stamp on the Arsenal side.

And Leno is the keeper he wants to 'lead' his new look side, report Football.London.

Leno has spent the past seven years at Bayer Leverkusen but the Bundesliga side expect the stopper, who has a £22million release clause, to move on this summer.

In preparation for Leno's exit, they have brought in Lukas Hradecky from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller said: “Leno can leave but only on our terms.

“We are still in constant and open exchange with Bernd and his manager. Leno already had a concrete offer from Napoli in 2017, but we didn’t have an equivalent backup at the time.

“He had to stay and he did really well last season, but we thought Bernd’s desire to leave would resurface so and so with the arrival of Lukáš Hrádecký we have a high quality successor.”

Arsenal in talks with Bend Leno’s entourage

Arsenal are expecting to complete the signing of Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno imminently, according to Sport Bild.

The report suggests that an announcement is in the pipeline & although they’re not the most reliable outlet outside of Bayern Munich news, this report is backed up by others.

As we’ve known for some time, Leno would be allowed to leave Leverkusen for a fee in the region on ?20 million – ?25m.

This is further backed up by Sky Sport & Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted late Tuesday night that talks are ongoing.

German goalkeeper Bernd Leno has agreed to join us from Bayer Leverkusen.

The highly-rated 26-year-old made more than 230 appearances for Leverkusen in more than seven seasons with the Bundesliga side.

Spending most of his youth career at Stuttgart, Leno signed for Leverkusen in 2011 and that September became the youngest goalkeeper to feature in a Champions League match at the age of just 19 years and 193 days, during Leverkusen’s group-stage game against Chelsea.

A Germany international, Bernd received his first senior international call-up in 2015 and has since won six caps for his country. Last year he was part of the Germany squad that won the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Head coach Unai Emery said: “We are very pleased that Bernd Leno will be joining us. Bernd is a goalkeeper of high quality and experience. He has been a top performer and regular number one goalkeeper with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga for the past seven years. We are all excited that Bernd has chosen Arsenal Football Club and look forward to start working with him in pre-season.”

Bernd’s shirt number will be announced in due course.

The deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
