Newcastle in talks for West Brom striker Salomon Rondon

Newcastle are in talks with West Brom to sign striker Salomon Rondon, according to Sky sources.

We understand the Venezuela international has a £16.5m release clause in his contract and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez sees him as a replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Newcastle have stepped up their interest in Rondon following the Serb's proposed transfer to Fulham, which is close to completion, with Mitrovic now in London for a medical.

The move for Rondon could involve Dwight Gayle going in the other direction - either in a straight loan-swap or a player-plus-cash deal.

Gayle was an unused substitute in Saturday night's 0-0 draw with Porto.

Salomon Rondon: Newcastle close to signing West Brom striker

Newcastle are close to signing Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon from West Brom.

The two clubs have been negotiating a deal for the 28-year-old, which could be concluded over the weekend.

Rondon was not included in West Brom's squad for their Championship opener against Bolton on Saturday.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has been looking to strengthen his squad and Rondon would be the sixth signing of the summer transfer window.

Japan striker Yoshinori Muto signed on Thursday, following the arrival of Switzerland defender Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna last week.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka joined on a permanent contract following a six-month loan spell, while they have also added former Swansea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng on a free transfer and Chelsea midfielder Kenedy has returned on a season-long loan.

Newcastle and West Brom are close to sealing a loan deal swap for strikers Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle, Sky Sports News understands.

Both sides have come to a verbal agreement on the deal, which will see the players spend the 2018/19 season on loan before returning to their parent clubs next summer.

It is understood Newcastle will pay a £2m loan fee for the services of Venezuela international Rondon.

The move would see Gayle play his football once again in the Sky Bet Championship, where he was prolific for the Magpies during the 2016/17 campaign, scoring 23 goals in 34 games as they were promoted back to the top flight.

Rondon will add firepower to Rafael Benitez's side and is set to join fellow newcomer Yoshinori Muto, who completed his move to St James' Park on Thursday.

Rafael Benitez has expressed frustration over Newcastle's transfer activity, admitting he is unhappy that the club are "looking to just survive every year".

"I have a lot of confidence in this group of players but they (the club) know we have to do something if we want to improve the competition between players," he said.

"If you are asking me if it is ideal, I would say no, because the way that I like to work is doing things early. But we can't do that at the moment. It's just trying to improve as much as we can."

Newcastle have signed striker Salomon Rondon from West Brom on a season-long loan, with Dwight Gayle heading to the Championship side on the same deal.

Venezuela international Rondon, 28, scored seven Premier League goals for the relegated Baggies last season and becomes Newcastle's sixth signing of the transfer window.

Gayle, 27, scored six league goals last season as the Magpies finished 10th.

"I am delighted to sign Salomon," said Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez.

"When we were looking for options up front, we knew how important experience would be."

Rondon said West Brom would "forever be in my heart" but was "honoured to be joining one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and a team whose fanbase and history are well known the world over".

Newcastle signed Japan striker Yoshinori Muto on Thursday, following the arrival of Switzerland defender Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna last week.
