West Ham will have to meet Maxi Gomez’s £43.3m release clause to buy the Celta Vigo striker.

The Uruguayan is on West Ham ’s shortlist as they consider whether to buy a striker in the January transfer window.

It is a big price but Celta will not sell unless the clause is triggered and West Ham are now considering whether to press ahead.

If the deal goes ahead it would set a new club transfer record, beating the £36m they paid Lazio for Brazilian Felipe Anderson last summer.

It comes amid continued uncertainty over Marko Arnautovic's future.

Shanghai SIPG have failed to increase their £35m offer for Arnautovic, who has made it clear he wants to leave London Stadium.

Arnautovic was left out of the Hammers' defeat at Bournemouth last weekend after manager Manuel Pellegrini did not feel he was in the right frame of mind.

Arnautovic has returned to training but is not expected to be involved in Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at AFC Wimbledon.

HAMMERS IN GOMEZ TALKS

Talks continue between representatives of West Ham and Celta Vigo over the signing of striker Maxi Gomez, according to Sky sources.

Celta Vigo will not let him go in this window unless his ?50m release clause is met in full.

Celta Sporting Director Felipe Minambres said: "I believe that we will retain our most important players because it is the intention of the club to be strong. But with the English you never know.”

West Ham want to sign Gomez regardless of Marko Arnautovic’s future. A potential deal would see the Hammers break their record £35m, plus add-ons, deal to sign Felipe Anderson in the summer.

West Ham are considering whether to trigger Maxi Gomez's £43.3m release clause at Spanish side Celta Vigo.

The Hammers have had one bid rejected for the 22-year-old Uruguay striker, who has scored nine goals this season.

If the deal does go through it would be a club record for West Ham, eclipsing the £36m they paid Lazio for Brazilian Felipe Anderson in the summer.

The interest comes amid continued uncertainty over Marko Arnautovic's future at the Premier League club.

Negotiations are ongoing over a deal which could see him loaned back until the end of the season given Celta Vigo’s position at the wrong end of La Liga.

West Ham are close to agreeing a deal with Celta Vigo that would see striker Maxi Gomez arrive in the summer. Gomez will remain at Celta Vigo for the rest of the season. The compromise means West Ham are expected to pay less than the £43.3m release clause - it is thought the fee will be around £40m.
