Mavericks send pick for Blazers’ Rudy Fernandez

DALLAS (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks are already gearing up to defend their title, trading both their draft picks Thursday night to get Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez(notes).

“So happy to be in the best team in the nba!!!dallas!!!” Fernandez tweeted.

Fernandez has spent his three NBA seasons in Portland. Only 26, he’s also been a standout in international play. He could step in as Dallas’ starting shooting guard or become another piece in a deep, versatile rotation.

“We’re in a playoff-championship push mode,” said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations. “We think the player we acquired is going to help us more than the pick would.”

Dallas spent the 26th pick on Jordan Hamilton and the 57th pick on Tanguy Ngombo. Hamilton went to Denver and Ngombo to Portland in a deal that also involved a swap of point guards for the Nuggets and Trail Blazers.

The Mavericks also picked up the rights to Petteri Koponen, who is playing in Europe. A point guard from Finland, he’s spent three years with Virtus Bologna in Italy.

“Rudy is an athletic, young, exciting player with significant upside,” Nelson said in a statement. “His international and postseason experience will prove to be very valuable. Petteri is a young combo guard who was a first round selection in 2007 and is developing nicely in Europe.”

Fernandez has been a backup most of his NBA career. He’s averaged 9.1 points over 24.1 minutes in 218 games.

His role in Dallas remains to be determined, but his age and experience make for a nice fit—especially compared to an unpolished product.

“The balance is a player that’s a young one vs. one that’s been in the league a few years and can help us right away,” Nelson said.

Nelson said this deal had been discussed for a while, heating up in the last few days.

“This was our `A’ scenario,” he said.

Shooting guard was an erratic spot for Dallas this past season.

DeShawn Stevenson(notes) drew most of the starts in the regular season, then gave way to Rodrigue Beaubois(notes), whom the team was expecting to have a breakout year. But he had trouble recovering from a broken foot and missed time, and Stevenson regained the job in the finale. He started every postseason game until Game 4 of the NBA finals, when backup point guard J.J. Barea(notes) took over.

Stevenson is a free agent. So is Peja Stojakovic(notes), another role player whose best skills could be replaced by Fernandez.

Beaubois will be back next season and may get another chance to start. Fernandez could push him for the job or be part of Dallas’ bench. Jason Terry(notes) already is their primary shooting guard.

This past season, Fernandez averaged 8.6 points in the regular season but scored only 2.8 per game in a first-round series against the Mavericks. He made only 4 of 18 shots.

Blazers, Nuggets deal on draft night

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—The Trail Blazers acquired guard Raymond Felton(notes) from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for veteran guard Andre Miller(notes) in a trade Thursday night that was part of a flurry of moves that Portland made during the NBA draft.

The Blazers also traded swingman Rudy Fernandez(notes) to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the draft rights to Jordan Hamilton, the 26th overall pick who was in turn included in the deal with Denver.

It was an active draft for the Blazers and Chad Buchanan, Portland’s acting general manager after the team dismissed Rich Cho last month.

Stephen Jackson traded to Bucks

Milwaukee has agreed to a three-team trade with the Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Bobcats that will put shooting guard Stephen Jackson in a Bucks uniform.

The Bucks will get Jackson and Charlotte's Shaun Livingston, Sacramento's Beno Udrih and the rights to 19th pick Tobias Harris from the Bobcats, while Charlotte obtains the rights to the seventh pick, Bismack Biyombo, and forward Corey Maggette from Milwaukee.

The Kings will get guard John Salmons from Milwaukee and the rights to BYU guard Jimmer Fredette, who was selected 10th by the Bucks.
Charlotte held onto the No. 9 pick, which it used to select UConn guard Kemba Walker, and with the trades of Gerald Wallace to Portland last season and now Jackson to the Bucks, the Bobcats have resigned themselves to rebuilding through the draft.

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—The San Antonio Spurs knew they needed changes, and they used the NBA draft to start making some.

Sources: David West to be free agent

Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in March, New Orleans Hornets power forward David West is expected to opt out of the final season of his contract this week and become a free agent, according to sources close to the situation.

West has a June 30 deadline in his contract to notify the Hornets whether he will invoke next season's $7.5 million salary or opt for free agency, but sources say that the Hornets are already bracing for West to make his opt-out decision official before Thursday's buzzer.

The Hornets have anticipated all along that West would become a free agent, even though the former All-Star was forced to undergo surgery in April to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered March 24. The reason: West still figures to be one of the two or three most coveted players on the open market in spite of the injury after years of consistent production and averages of 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 70 games last season.

The Hornets, sources said, would still love to sign West to an extension before Thursday's deadline. But it's believed that West -- even in a financial landscape forecasted to be more restrictive starting next season and even factoring in his injury -- will eventually earn more in free agency than he could in an extension that would have to be calculated with next season's $7.5 million salary as a starting point.

Free agency will be delayed if the NBA, as expected, imposes a lockout July 1. But sources say only an unforeseen rehabilitation setback in the next 72 hours would change West's plans.

Denver Nuggets' Nene to opt out of contract, become an unrestricted free agent

Now the real work begins for the Nuggets in trying to retain their starting center.
Nene will opt out of the final year of his contract worth nearly $12 million and, as a result, become an unrestricted free agent, a source familiar with the situation said Wednesday night.

It means Nene can sign with any team he wishes without the Nuggets getting a chance to match the offer when free agency begins after the expected NBA lockout, which likely will start Friday.

Nene had until today to make a final decision.

The Nuggets tried to sign him to a contract extension before today, the last day of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, but to no avail. Instead, Nene figures to have many suitors — including the Nuggets — as he explores his options.

Nene opted out of the final year of the six-year, $60 million contract that he signed in 2006.

Nene repeatedly has said he would like to retire in a Nuggets uniform. But he expressed concerns about his situation in a wide-ranging interview with The Denver Post after the season.

"I've been here for nine years," Nene, 28, said in early May. "If that doesn't work how you want it, you need to sit down and evaluate everything and see what you can do."

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—The Trail Blazers have offered former No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden(notes) an $8.8 million qualifying offer to stay in Portland.

The offer means the often-injured 7-foot center becomes a restricted free agent. The Blazers can match any other offer made for him.

Oden, 23, didn’t play this past season after microfracture surgery on his left knee. He missed his rookie season in 2007-08 after microfracture surgery on his right knee. Two seasons ago he broke his left kneecap.

Because of his injuries, the former Ohio State star has played in only 82 games over parts of two seasons, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

“We’ve stood behind Greg Oden every day since he became a Trail Blazer and that continues with today’s announcement,” Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said in a statement. “Despite the setbacks he’s experienced, he continues to be resilient in working tirelessly on his rehabilitation. We’re all very encouraged with not only his progress, but with his commitment and determination to return to the basketball court.”

AP source: Heat’s Jones to become free agent

MIAMI (AP)—A person familiar with the situation says Miami Heat guard-forward James Jones(notes) has advised the team he won’t exercise his player option and will become a free agent.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the Heat had not confirmed Jones’ decision.

Jones is an eight-year veteran who spent the past three seasons with the Heat. He averaged 5.9 points in 81 games last season and shot 43-percent from 3-point range for the Eastern Conference champions.

Under his contract, Jones would have been paid $1.4 million next season.

Kings send Casspi, future draft pick to Cavs for Hickson
Posted Jun 30 2011 2:32PM - Updated Jun 30 2011 6:19PM

CLEVELAND (AP) -- J.J. Hickson's athleticism and potential made him a budding NBA star. His inconsistency made him maddening and expendable.

On Thursday, the Cleveland Cavaliers decided it was time to move on without him.

Clearing out a logjam at power forward, they traded the enigmatic Hickson to the Sacramento Kings for forward Omri Casspi and a future first-round pick.

Hickson spent three mostly productive seasons in Cleveland, but his days were numbered when the club drafted Texas forward Tristan Thompson with the No. 4 overall pick last week. Hickson was part of the Cavs' core when they won more than 60 regular-season games in consecutive seasons and pushed deep into the playoffs.

And although he may have been Cleveland's most talented player, a tendency to disappear in games and an overall lack of intensity - especially rebounding - frustrated Cavaliers coach Byron Scott last season. Scott was hard and demanded more of Hickson, who finally picked up his game and averaged 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds.

But with Thompson, Antawn Jamison and Samardo Samuels at power forward, someone had to go and it was Hickson, drafted by the Cavs with the No. 19 overall pick in 2008. The Cavs were also seeking a young, wing player to pair with Thompson and No. 1 overall pick Kyrie Irving and they believe they've gotten one in the 23-year-old Casspi, a player they considered drafting when he first made himself available several years ago.

"We like Casspi," said Cavs general manager Chris Grant, who wouldn't say if he expects Casspi to start immediately. "He's a tough, athletic, 6-foot-9 kid. He's got a nastiness and fight about him."

Grant was quick to point out that Casspi, who played two seasons with the Kings, made 47 percent of his 3-point tries from the corner, another weapon for Scott and a target for Irving.

"It gives us a chance to give the guys room to grow on the court together and gives our roster more balance financially moving forward," Grant said. "I felt that, where our team is, and where it's headed, that this was the right move for our franchise."

Casspi became the first Israeli ever to play in the NBA when he was drafted by Sacramento 23rd overall in 2009. The designation came with as much fanfare as it did pressure to succeed from a country that loves basketball. He started 27 games for the Kings, but his minutes were limited playing behind promising youngsters DeMarcus Cousins, Jason Thompson and Donte Green.

Casspi was excited about coming to Cleveland to play for Scott.

"I know he's a tough coach who likes tough players," he said on a teleconference from Los Angeles. "That's good for me."

He also wondered what Grant meant about him being "nasty."

"Sometimes I play hard," he said with a laugh, "and sometimes I might play too hard."

The Cavaliers said the first-round pick they obtained is lottery protected in 2012 (Nos. 1-14). The pick is then protected in 2013 (1-13), 2014 (1-12) and 2015-2017 (1-10). If the pick is not conveyed by 2017, then Sacramento will convey its own 2017 second-round pick to the Cavaliers.

Hickson will join a Kings team undergoing change while dealing with an uncertain future.

On the verge of relocating earlier this year to Anaheim, Calif., the Kings need to build momentum with a strong showing this season for a new arena in Sacramento. NBA Commissioner David Stern and Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof have all but guaranteed the franchise will relocate if the city doesn't approve to plan to help finance a new arena by March 1, which is usually the deadline for teams to file for relocation for the following season.

The team caused a stir on draft night by acquiring Brigham Young's Jimmer Fredette, the high-scoring, highly debated guard whose addition has sparked some interest. The Kings intend to pair Fredette in the backcourt with Tyreke Evans, the league's top rookie in 2009-10.

Hickson will certainly improve Sacramento's frontcourt. He can play forward or center.

"This is a chance to acquire a young player that has already proven himself to a pretty decent level in the league and someone who can strengthen our roster," Kings GM Geoff Petrie said, adding he had trade talks with the Cavs before and during the draft. "There is still a lot of upside there. A lot of the players taken in the draft a week ago are not that much younger than J.J. and he has had three years in the league and he was getting more productive each year."

Kings coach Paul Westphal is excited about the Hickson-Cousins-Thompson trio.

"He is a really good fit," Westphal said. "All three of those players can play a little bit (of) center and power forward. It gives us a very solid rotation. (Hickson) has shown versatility and ability to fit in. I don't think that you necessarily have to run every play for him to have him be effective. But at the same time, he can be effective if you run plays for him.

"He's somebody that we are getting at a real good time in his career. He's already shown a track record of success."

Nets guard Vujacic signs with Turkish club

ANKARA (AP)—New Jersey Nets guard Sasha Vujacic(notes) has signed with a Turkish team for next season.

Anadolu Efes said Friday the 27-year old Slovenian guard agreed to a one-year deal with an optional second year. It did not say whether Vujacic has an option to return to New Jersey if the NBA lockout is lifted.

Vujacic averaged 11.4 points in 56 games last season for the Nets. He joined the Nets in a three-team deal in December from the Los Angeles Laker. He played there for six seasons, winning two NBA titles.

With the next NBA season threatened by the lockout, Turkish club Besiktas has previously said it is close to signing Nets All-Star guard Deron Williams(notes). Nets’ draft pick Bojan Bogdanovic(notes) signed with Fenerbahce of the Turkish League in June.

Istanbul-based Efes has won 13 national titles.

Deron Williams inks deal with Besiktas

t's official: New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams will be playing in Turkey next season if there's an NBA lockout.

Williams tweeted the signature on his one-year contract with Besiktas late Friday night from his verified Twitter account.

"Just made it official, headed to Turkey ...signed with Besiktas & @BJK_Basketbol," he wrote.

Williams' contract with Besiktas is worth $5 million, sources told ESPN.com's Chris Broussard.

Atlanta Hawks center Zaza Pachulia also has an agreement to play for the club, which briefly employed Allen Iverson last season.

Sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein last week that Williams would not be required to report to the Turkish club before the end of August or early September and that his deal with them would include an immediate out that allows him to return to the NBA as soon as the work stoppage ends.

Williams has two years left on his contract with the Nets but is widely expected to opt out the final season, valued at nearly $18 million, to become a free agent in the summer of 2012.

Williams, 27, averaged 20.1 points and 10.3 assists for the Nets and the Utah Jazz last season.

Players under contract like Williams would typically need a letter of clearance from FIBA -- the sport's world governing body -- to play anywhere else. But the NBA Players Association has privately maintained for months that it intends to legally challenge any attempt by the NBA or FIBA to block a player such as Williams from playing elsewhere while the NBA has imposed a work stoppage.

"If they try to stop him," one source said of Williams, "the union will fight it."

The bigger risk for Williams is injury-related, especially after he was plagued by a wrist injury throughout the second half of last season after the Nets acquired him from Utah on Feb. 24. The injury required surgery on Williams' right wrist after the season.

Nets guard Farmar signs with Israeli champions

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP)—[pb]Jordan Farmar became the latest New Jersey Nets player to head for the European leagues when he signed with Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2 guard will play for Tel Aviv as long as the NBA lockout continues, the team said in a statement.

Farmar, who is Jewish, won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers before moving to the Nets in 2010.

Fellow Nets stars Deron Williams(notes) and Sasha Vujacic(notes) have signed to play for Turkish teams, Williams for Besiktas and Vujacic for Anadolu Efes. Besiktas also has claimed to have held talks with Kobe Bryant’s(notes) representatives.

At Tel Aviv, Farmar will play alongside former Duke guard Jon Scheyer(notes), who signed this summer. Both will be eligible to play as Israelis, not counting against the four foreign players per team limit in the Israeli league.

“Coach David Blatt spoke with Farmar several times, and was impressed by his intense desire to play Maccabi Tel Aviv in front of the Israeli public and to contribute as much as possible,” the team said. “Thanks to his deep Jewish roots and his great basketball skills, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv decided to accept him into the team with open arms.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv was the runner-up in the Euroleague last season.
