Manchester United have made goalkeeper David de Gea an improved contract offer in a bid to keep the Spain international at Old Trafford.

De Gea's current deal runs out in 12 months and efforts to get the 28-year-old to agree an extension have failed.

It is understood United's latest offer would make De Gea the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.

He came within a minute of joining Real Madrid in 2015.

Whilst it is felt the former Atletico Madrid man wants to remain in Manchester, it is understood his advisors believe his status as one of the key figures in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad, and United's player of the year in four seasons out of five, should make him one of the club's highest earners.

Out-of-favour forward Alexis Sanchez's £390,000-a-week contract is seen as the benchmark.

Senior United figures have previously indicated they would allow De Gea's contract to run down in the hope an agreement will be reached, even though it risks one of their most saleable assets leaving for nothing at the end of the season.

Manchester United have offered David De Gea an improved deal in a bid to keep the Spain goalkeeper and finally end their protracted contract stand-off.

The Telegraph reported last month that United were preparing to make a new offer to De Gea after he rejected previous proposals during more than a year of talks.

United have now presented that offer to De Gea and his agent, Jorge Mendes, in a final bid to resolve the situation and both parties remain in negotiations.

De Gea, 28, has been seeking a deal closer to the £500,000 a week package, including bonuses, that United’s top earner, Alexis Sanchez, receives but the club have been unwilling to go that high.

The new offer is thought to be worth in excess of £350,000 a week - a huge rise on his existing deal, which is worth about £240,000 including bonuses - and United are hoping De Gea will accept.

United have been looking at goalkeeping alternatives, including Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, in the event they are forced to sell De Gea, although they have been adamant they do not intend to offload him this summer, despite the threat of losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of next season and will be free to negotiate with clubs outside England from Jan. 1. Paris St Germain and Juventus are among the clubs who have had an interest in De Gea.

Sanchez’s arrival on a huge contract last year has led to increased pay demands from existing players, with the De Gea situation one example of that, and raised questions about the wisdom of offering such a massive pay day to the Chile striker.

Manchester City backed out of a deal for Sanchez amid fears that it would destabilise their wage structure.

United’s feeling is that the huge inflation in the transfer market in the past two years is now also being felt in terms of wages and that a catch-up was inevitable.

David De Gea is set to finally end the uncertainty over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Manchester United once the club returns from their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

The deal is likely to be worth in excess of £350,000 a week and will make De Gea the highest paid goalkeeper in the world.

De Gea, 28, has been locked in a contract stand-off with United for the past year and the club have risked losing him for nothing when his existing deal expires at the end of next season amid interest from Paris St. Germain.

But United made the Spain No. 1 an improved offer in recent weeks and it is now expected that he will end the impasse by putting pen to paper on a bumper new deal.

It is likely to make him United’s best paid player after Chile striker Alexis Sanchez, whose basic £391,000 a week salary balloons to around £500,000 a week once assorted bonus clauses are factored in. It also follows the news earlier this month that Marcus Rashford had signed a heavily incentivised new four-year contract with United worth about £200,000 a week rising to over £300,000 a week with bonuses.

United are due to face Leeds United at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Wednesday, when security will be beefed up amid fears of trouble between rival fans. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad then travel to Singapore to play Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup on Saturday and, from there, flying to Shanghai for an ICC game against Tottenham five days later.

They are also due to play Kristiansund in Oslo on July 30 and AC Milan at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff four days later, with De Gea likely to sign once United are back in Manchester.

The prospect of De Gea following Rashford by committing his long-term future will be a boost to Solskjaer at a time when there is growing disillusionment among the fan base with less than four weeks until the start of the new season.

United have encountered frustration in their attempts to strengthen a squad that finished sixth, 32 points behind champions Manchester City, last season. Leicester and Newcastle are playing hardball over centre half Harry Maguire and midfielder Sean Longstaff respectively and other deals yet to get off the ground.

Solskjaer’s only two signings to date, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, had still to make senior professional appearances as of 18 months ago and uncertainty continues to surround the futures of high profile stars Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, who want to leave for Real Madrid and Inter Milan respectively.

Manchester United are increasingly confident that goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new contract when they return from the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

De Gea, 28, is about to enter the final year of his deal and will be free to talk to clubs abroad from January.

However, talks resumed earlier this month and officials to believe De Gea will commit to United long term.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has secured two new signings so far this summer.

Winger Daniel James joined from Swansea for £15m in June.

That was followed by the arrival of right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka in a £50m deal from Crystal Palace.

Retaining one of the world's most highly-rated goalkeepers would be a major coup for Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has been unable to execute the ruthless squad rebuilding he would like this summer.

Question marks remain over the future of record signing Paul Pogba, while sources suggest striker Romelu Lukaku has appeared an increasingly isolated figure on the club's nine-day stay in Perth.

As yet, though, there has still been no formal bid from Inter Milan, who have been linked with the Belgian throughout the summer.

It is understood United are still no closer to signing Leicester defender Harry Maguire, with the clubs still apart in their valuation of the England centre-half.

David De Gea will become the world’s highest paid goalkeeper after agreeing a new six-year contract with Manchester United worth around £117 million.

But Romelu Lukaku remains determined to quit United and is hoping Inter Milan come back with an improved offer after the Italian club had an opening £54 million bid rejected.

De Gea - who made his first appearance of pre-season in United’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Singapore on Saturday - will put pen to paper on the new deal, which is believed to be worth around £375,000 a week, once he returns to Manchester from the tour.

Yet while the United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will be relieved about the clarity over De Gea’s future, Lukaku remains stuck in limbo.

Teenage striker Mason Greenwood again took full advantage of Lukaku’s continued absence with the only goal against Inter in the International Champions Cup at Singapore’s National Stadium, three days after claiming his first senior goal in the 4-0 victory against Leeds United in Perth.

Solskjaer has ruled out any prospect of Greenwood being loaned out as the 17-year-old further boosted his chances of starting United’s opening Premier League game against Chelsea on August 11.

De Gea is believed to have thought long and hard about his future this summer after a dismal last season, when United finished sixth in the Premier League, 32 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

United’s willingness to make him the club’s highest paid player after Alexis Sanchez and the support he received from Solskjaer and the coaching staff in the final months of the campaign, when his form nosedived, had a significant bearing on his decision.

De Gea, 28, was said to have been at a very low ebb by the end of last season and needed his spirits lifting but he likes working with goalkeeping coach, Emilio Alvarez, and believes United can get back to challenging for top honours.

United would not sanction the England Under-21 goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, returning to Sheffield United on loan until De Gea’s future was resolved. But a meeting between Henderson’s agent, Sean McDaid, and United’s head of corporate development, Matt Judge, in London on Monday over a new contract for the goalkeeper went well and another loan deal with Sheffield United should be agreed soon. Henderson has attracted some interest from Bayern Munich but United regard him as a potential future No 1.
