Mainz 0-1 Hamburg SVHamburg ended Mainz's perfect start to the season with a last-gasp 1-0 win at the Bruchweg Stadion.
Jose Paolo Guerrero's goal in the 88th minute prevented Thomas Tuchel's side from setting a new record of eight consecutive wins at the start of the season and saw them lose top spot for the first time.
Both sides had hit the post in an entertaining game which, for the first time this season, did not end in glory for Mainz.
The home side's coveted midfielder Lewis Holtby showed why many of Europe's top clubs have their eyes on him with another stirring performance.
His shot in the 25th minute brought a fine one-handed, diving save out of Hamburg goalkeeper Frank Rost.
Two minutes later, Holtby set up Adam Szalai for a chance, but he shot wide under pressure from Ze Roberto.
Hamburg's first chance of the game arrived in the 29th minute when Ruud van Nistelrooy chose the wrong option when he was put through on goal.
Rather than placing his shot, he tried a delicate chip, but only lifted the ball into the arms of Mainz goalkeeper Christian Wetklo.
Van Nistelrooy then set up Ze Roberto for the best chance of the first half in the 41st minute, but the Brazilian's shot hit the post.
Marco Caligiuri hit the post at the other end in the 68th minute with a shot which was made possible by a clever dummy by Holtby.
Holtby then created a chance out of nothing with a tricky move near the halfway line paving the way for a run towards the edge of the area, from where he tested Rost again.
Piotr Trochowski's corner hit the top of the crossbar in the 87th minute of a match which seemed to be heading for a stalemate until Ze Roberto raced to the goalline and pulled the ball back to Guerrero, who drilled his shot into the roof of the net from close range to earn Hamburg all three points.
