Manchester United are hoping to capitalise on Newcastle's failure to tie Sean Longstaff down to a long-term deal.

They are poised to bid for the 21-year-old, who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes will develop into a top-class all-round midfielder.

Interest from Old Trafford has come as a surprise to Newcastle, who were holding off contract talks with Longstaff until Rafael Benitez’s future was resolved.

Now United are hoping to take advantage, with the player entering the final two years of his contract at St James’ Park.

A bid in the region of around £25million is expected to be enough to secure a deal.

United waited until the final weeks of the season to express interest in Longstaff, with Solskjaer considering a number of potential targets as he looks to bring in two midfielders this summer.

He fits into the United manager’s strategy of reducing the age profile of his squad and securing the best emerging talent in Britain.

Longstaff is seen as being able to play in a holding role or as a box-to-box midfielder who can score goals.

After losing Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini since the turn of the year, Solskjaer has identified midfield as a key area in need of address.

Scott McTominay will be given a more prominent role next season, while there will be hope Fred can justify his £52m price tag in his second year in English football.

United have also considered moves for Bruno Fernandes, Idrissa Gueye and Youri Tielemans as Solskjaer tries to find the right balance.

Solskjaer's pursuit of the brightest homegrown talent has also seen him track Stoke’s 18-year-old defender Nathan Collins.

United are also ready to open the bidding for Aaron Wan-Bissaka with an offer of £25m for the Crystal Palace right-back, while Swansea’s Daniel James is on the verge of a £15m move.

Newcastle United have re-iterated their message that they will resist any offers for Sean Longstaff after national reports suggested a bid from Manchester United would materialise by the weekend.

The Telegraph and the Times carried well-sourced claims from the Old Trafford end that Newcastle’s resolve will be tested with an official bid for Longstaff imminently. They said Red Devils scouts have been impressed by his composure and ability in a deep-lying midfield role.

But Newcastle are adamant that the 21-year-old will not be sold and the player himself is satisfied with his development at St James’ Park, where he will be a key man next season.

Manchester United are set to continue their summer investment in youth by trying to sign Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to reshape a squad that tailed off badly after an excellent start under the Norwegian last season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to complete his £50m move from Crystal Palace after Thursday's medical.

United signed 21-year-old Daniel James from Swansea earlier this month.

It is understood Solskjaer is also keen on Longstaff, another 21-year-old, who impressed at St James' Park after making his debut in December 2018, only to have his season curtailed by a knee injury.

In pursuing a policy of trying to sign younger players who can develop at Old Trafford, Solskjaer believes he is following a policy that proved successful under Sir Alex Ferguson, with the former striker himself an example after he arrived as a relatively unknown 23-year-old from Molde in 1996.

United are trying to sign an experienced central defender, although their chances of signing England's Harry Maguire are reduced significantly by Leicester's demands, which are understood to be more than the £70m fee that put the Red Devils off a similar deal 12 months ago.

Of their more established stars, striker Romelu Lukaku remains the most likely to leave.

Inter Milan are keen on the £75m former Everton forward but it is not clear whether the club now managed by Antonio Conte, who wanted to sign Lukaku when he was at Chelsea, can put together a deal that would be financially acceptable to the United hierarchy.

Manchester United left stunned by Newcastle's £50m asking price for Sean Longstaff

Manchester United have been left stunned after being quoted £50 million for Sean Longstaff by Newcastle United.

Longstaff has surprisingly emerged as a leading midfield target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but, despite having only made nine Premier League appearances for Newcastle, the Tyneside club have slapped a huge price tag on the 21 year-old’s head.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, is understood to have contacted Lee Charnley, the Newcastle managing director, on Saturday to enquire about Longstaff only to be told he will cost £50m.

That figure is way over double what the Manchester club are prepared to pay for Longstaff, who value the youngster at between £18m and £20m.

Longstaff only made his Premier League debut last December but Newcastle are thought to be using the projected £50m fee that the Old Trafford outfit paid Crystal Palace for England Under-21 right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a benchmark.

United are believed to have been taken aback by Newcastle’s position. Longstaff is known to want to come to Old Trafford but Newcastle’s stance may force United to pursue alternative targets.

Although United recognise they are operating in an inflated market and there is a premium on young British players, there is some concern that there is almost an additional tax on players they are interested in signing.

Solskjaer stressed on Wednesday that United will not be held to ransom and want “the right players at the right prices”, but they are likely to have to make Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender if they are to prise him away from Leicester City, which has become the subject of their focus of late.
