Olivier Giroud denied that he has reached an agreement to join Arsenal, despite confirmations that Montpellier were in negotiations with the London side.

The 25-year-old forward is a top transfer target of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, but the assertions of Giroud suggest there is still more work to be done if the French international is to join the Premier League club.

"I have not signed for Arsenal," was Giroud's curt reply to RMC Sport when quizzed on the topic following France's 2-0 loss to Sweden at Euro 2012.

Wenger is in the market for a new forward to bolster his striking options, and is eager to add the Ligue 1 top scorer to the club's ranks as they prepare for the possible departure of Robin van Persie.

Giroud fired Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title last season with 21 goals in 36 games.

Arsene Wenger bets an ice cream that Robin van Persie will stay at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has insisted there is no chance of Robin van Persie going to Juventus – and told an Italian journalist he would even buy him an ice cream if any deal went through.

The Arsenal captain has been targeted throughout Euro 2012 by the Italian champions, who dispatched Pavel Nedved to talk to the 28-year-old. They have also opened tentative negotiations with the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski.

However, Wenger, who is working as a commentator for French television, said a move to Turin would have little attraction for Van Persie.

"He will stay at Arsenal," Wenger told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. "There is no reason why a top player, a big champion would want a move to Serie A – in terms of the prestige of the league, the level of play or financial considerations.

"If he moves there, I will buy you a caramello," Wenger concluded.

With one year remaining on his contract, Van Persie's future at club level remains in limbo. His father has said he will not consider another English club. However, talks with Arsenal's chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, reached no immediate conclusion and there have been no public declarations of interest by either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is excited about the potential of Olivier Giroud after confirming a deal for the French striker is '90 per cent' complete.

The Montpellier star, who is part of Laurent Blanc's Euro 2012 squad, is thought to command a transfer fee in the region of £13million.

The 25-year-old scored 25 goals for his club last season to help them win the Ligue 1 title, igniting the interest of several top clubs.

However, it appears Arsenal are set to add the promising Frenchman to their squad, which has already been bolstered by the arrival of Germany marksman Lukas Podolski.

"Podolski did a great job for the German team, he has superb team work"

Wenger said on French TV station TF1: "Giroud didn't play much (at the Euros so far), but he's going to be an Arsenal player 90 per cent next season.

"I think he has exceptional potential and will integrate very well in our collective and our way of playing.

"He is a real team player and knows how to combine with other players and I'm sure he will do well with us."

Wenger is working at the European Championship as a media pundit, and has been impressed by Podolski's displays so far.

"Podolski did a great job for the German team, he has superb team work," said the Arsenal boss.

"He plays in a cautious way sometimes, but he's still scored a very important goal against Denmark for his 100th cap. I am very happy with what I've seen from him."

Once the deal for Giroud is complete, Arsenal could then look to offload some of their fringe players, including Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner and Morocco international Marouane Chamakh as well as Mexico forward Carlos Vela and Brazilian midfielder Denilson.

Arsenal could also now resurrect interest in Yann M'Vila after UEFA Champions League finalists Bayern Munich cooled their interest in the Rennes midfielder.
