DONE DEAL! MELBOURNE VICTORY SIGN HONDA - REPORTS Keisuke Honda will line up for Melbourne Victory next season after the A-League outfit agreed to a $2.9 million deal for the Japan superstar, according to reports.It is understood Victory have shelled out $1.3 million for the World Cup veteran, with Football Federation Australia tipping in the remainder courtesy of the Fox Sports $3 million marquee fund. According to The World Game an announcement on the one-year deal is imminent. Honda would be a huge coup for the A-League with the playmaker one of half a dozen veterans earmarked as potential drawcards by FFA.
The 32-year-old announced his retirement from international football after Japan was knocked out in the Round of 16 at the recent World Cup, where he scored against Senegal in the group stages.
Versatile, skilful, and a nemesis of the Socceroos, Honda can be deployed as a winger, attacking midfielder or playmaker in deep. His previous clubs include Nagoya Grampus, VVV-Venlo and CSKA Moscow.
He played for Serie A side Milan between 2014-17 where he made more than 80 appearances for nine goals. Most recently he lined up in the Mexican topflight with CF Pachuca.
Victory is also hoping to sign Socceroo Jamie Maclaren in what would prove a lethal attack for the reigning A-League champions.
The 24-year-old striker and former A-League Golden Boot is currently signed by 2.Bundesliga club Darmstadt.
