Manchester City are in talks to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, Sky Sports News understands.

According to Sky in Italy, Pep Guardiola and City are considering paying the £60m needed to trigger the France international's release clause.

City are in the market for a new centre-back in the January window and it is understood negotiations between the two clubs are continuing on Tuesday afternoon.

The 23-year old turned down a move to City when Guardiola first arrived at the club in 2016, and he has reportedly been of interest to a number of top clubs across Europe including Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea.

He has emerged as a top target for City, who have also shown interest in West Brom's Jonny Evans, Real Sociedad's Inigo Martinez and Leicester defender Harry Maguire.

Sky Sports News reported on Monday that Evans, who is also a target for Arsenal, has a release clause of just £3m should the Baggies be relegated.

City have funds in reserve after missing out on Alexis Sanchez, whom they were ready to pay £20m for, to Manchester United this month.

Manchester City ready to pay buyout clause for Laporte



Manchester City are already looking past the Sanchez saga as they look at La Liga to bring in reinforcement for the defence.
Guardiola's team are infact ready to pay to Athletic Club the ?65 million of the buyout clause in French centreback Aymeric Laporte's contract.
City showed interest in him in 2016 and now it is believed to be willing to buy the defender before the end of January transfer window.

Laporte will probably sign a 4 and half year deal, will be able to play the CL. City will pay his buy out clause of ?65m plus ?5m in development rights. Even though not the tallest, fast, can play from the back, left footed. Evans was considered at £20 (+ £4m for agent)

I say "probably" because City have not agreed terms with the player yet but it is not expected that to be an issue

LAPORTE DEAL 'IN NEXT FEW DAYS'

Guillem Balague believes a deal to take Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao to Manchester City could be completed soon.

"Manchester City were willing to pay his buyout clause in 2016 but the player decided against joining. I think City are confident he’ll say yes this time and everybody expects the deal to take place in the next few days."

Manchester City is not giving up on their effort to sign Aymeric Laporte but are waiting for developments from Bilbao in order to close the negotiations within the week.
There is an agreement between the club and player for a contract of 5 years, but are still awaiting the final ok to pay the 65 million euro release clause.
There are still some details that have to be worked out between the player and his current club, which his agent is working on now.
Manchester City is remaining calm in hope of giving the player to Pep Guardiola as a reinforcement now in January.

Manchester City are hopeful of completing a club-record £57m deal for defender Aymeric Laporte from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao.

City boss Pep Guardiola has admired the 23-year-old for some time and is willing to meet his release clause.

A deal for the French centre-back is yet to be agreed but negotiations are expected to be concluded before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

City's current transfer record is the £55m paid for Kevin de Bruyne in 2015.

The Belgium midfielder, who joined from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, has signed a new deal with the Premier League leaders that runs until 2023.

Laporte has been regarded as one of La Liga's finest young defenders since making his Spanish top-flight debut in 2012 but is yet to play for France's senior side.

He joined Bilbao aged 16 and has scored 10 goals in 222 appearances for the Basque club, as well as representing France 19 times at under-21 level.

His arrival would provide Guardiola with a valuable additional option in central defence.

Apart from the first-choice pair of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, the fitness of skipper Vincent Kompany has proved unreliable and Guardiola appears to lack confidence in the ability of Eliaquim Mangala.

In fact Aymeric Laporte is expected to arrive in Manchester on Monday night before taking a medical on Tuesday, the Citizens will pay Athletic Bilbao ?65 million plus a ?5 million bonus to acquire the French defender. Laporte will sign a 5 year deal and start the next chapter of his career in the Premier League.

Athletic have confirmed that Laporte's buy-out clause has been paid.

"On the 29 of January 2018, la Liga has certified to our club that Aymeric Laporte has seen fulfilled all the requirements for the resolution of his employment contract that bound him to our club.
The document quoted signals that the player has shown the will to resolve, unilaterally, the contract that bound him to the Athletic Club since the 09/10 season, and certificates the payment of the compensation established in the contract. Athletic Club thank the player for the contribute he gave during his time at the club".

With that statement, the Spanish side has made official the payment of the ?65m clause for the defender Aymeric Laporte, on his way to Manchester City.
The player is in a flight at the moment, ready to begin his new adventure with Pep Guardiola. The Citizens should officialize it tomorrow.
