Crystal Palace 2-1 Bolton: Christian Benteke hits double
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 17/01/17 10:13pm

Crystal Palace secured the first victory of Sam Allardyce's reign as manager by progressing to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 replay defeat of Bolton.

An opening hour bereft of belief and James Henry's goal for the visitors left Palace at risk of elimination to League One opposition, but two goals from substitute and club-record signing Christian Benteke eventually gave the manager his first win from six games.

They will next host Manchester City in the competition's next stage, but more important to Allardyce will have been overseeing his first victory since his appointment and the confidence he will hope his team now take into the Premier League.

The manager had made no secret of the fact he did not consider the cup a priority and would therefore field a weakened team but even if he retained only four of those selected in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at West Ham, his XI looked capable of overcoming the club at which he built his reputation.

Regardless, during an uninspiring first half between what appeared two evenly-matched teams, it was Bolton who provided the first attacking threat.

After a run down the left, Zach Clough cut the ball back to Josh Vela and the midfielder sent a powerful shot just wide of the right post.

Palace had little more than probed the visitors' settled defence with a through-ball from former Bolton winger Lee Chung-yong when Sulley Kaikai - starting his first game for the club - drew a foul from Jay Spearing on the edge of the area.

In what perhaps demonstrated the low confidence of the more senior Andros Townsend and Loic Remy, the 21-year-old then took responsibility for the free-kick and came within inches of the top right corner when he sent a curling effort just by the angle.

By half-time, Joe Ledley had been booked after handling the ball - sending it into the goal - from Kaikai's cross, and Martin Kelly had had a header saved by Ben Alnwick, but beyond Kaikai's energy there was little to give the hosts cause for optimism.

It was only three minutes into the second half when Henry - accused of being wasteful in front of goal this season - with little build-up or pressure unexpectedly curled into the top-right corner beyond Julian Speroni.

Palace continued to labour, but 14 minutes later Allardyce - perhaps sensing the potential damage to morale caused by another defeat - made a triple substitution, replacing Damien Delaney, Ledley and the ineffective Remy with James Tomkins, Jason Puncheon and Benteke.

After a further six minutes, Mathieu Flamini found space on the right wing to cross towards Benteke, and from within the penalty area the striker produced a trademark powerful header beyond Alnwick and into the back of the net.

Seizing on their momentum, Townsend did similarly on the left, this time sending a low ball towards the 26-year-old, who from a similar position classily controlled the ball before calmly finishing to secure a crucial win 13 minutes from time.

Burnley 2-0 Sunderland: Clarets ease into fourth round
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 17/01/17 10:08pm

Sunderland endured another miserable night at Turf Moor as they were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-0 loss at Burnley.

The Clarets' fifth successive victory in east Lancashire was earned through Sam Vokes' first-half header and a second from substitute Andre Gray as they set up a home clash with Bristol City in the next round.

And they were barely troubled by their fellow Premier League side, beaten 4-1 at this venue on New Year's Eve, as it took 88 minutes for George Honeyman to produce their first attempt on target shortly before they were booed off by the travelling support.

The third meeting in 18 days between these two sides saw a combined 10 changes made from the weekend Premier League XIs.

David Moyes had warned he would not risk the Black Cats' Premier League status at the expense of a cup run yet he made just three changes, though top scorer Jermain Defoe was only on the bench, while his counterpart Sean Dyche made seven.

With the Clarets 10 points clear of the bottom three, the prospect of further FA Cup ties would surely be more attractive for Dyche's men, who last made the fifth round in 2011.

And for all his alterations, this was a Clarets side brimming with confidence at a venue where Swansea, Arsenal and Manchester City are the only visitors to have won since December 2015.

There was a more possession-based focus about Burnley's play, epitomised by the classy Steven Defour and the recently re-recruited Joey Barton, and Vito Mannone was kept busy, saving from Jeff Hendrick and George Boyd early on.

Barton, who scored the winner against Southampton on Saturday, nearly found the net again with a deflected effort from range that Mannone pushed away while the Sunderland stopper also had to push another Boyd attempt over the bar.

However, despite popping around passes in midfield, it was through a Vokes header on the stroke of half-time that they led as the Welshman got in front of Jason Denayer to guide a Tendayi Darikwa cross beyond Mannone and into the far corner.

Moyes' side had not threatened Nick Pope's goal, an issue they at least addressed shortly after the resumption with Sebastian Larsson curling a shot just over.

But it was still the hosts who looked more lively as Vokes was denied by a last-gasp Papy Djilobodji challenge and Boyd's volley into the ground was claimed by Mannone.

Defoe's introduction just after the hour suggested Moyes was not content with a meek exit, not that the 12-goal striker was able to ignite them.

Hendrick could have put the tie to bed with just over 15 minutes remaining but waited too long to slip in Jon Flanagan, who had strayed offside by the time the Irishman released the ball.

Burnley need not worry given Sunderland's toothless attack and it was fittingly Gray who wrapped it up.

Eighteen days after scoring his first Premier League hat-trick, he finished off Boyd's pass to beat Mannone once more with seven minutes remaining.

There was still time for Sunderland to finally trouble Pope, through Honeyman's weak header, which brought ironic cheers, and Larsson's free-kick, which had to be pushed around the post, but they were unable to provide a consolation, or stop the Black Cats fans directing their anger at Moyes and his team as they walked past.

Plymouth 0-1 Liverpool: Lucas Leiva header sees Reds into next round

By Simeon Gholam
Last Updated: 18/01/17 10:03pm

Lucas Leiva's first-half header was enough for Liverpool to beat Plymouth 1-0 in their FA Cup third-round replay at Home Park.

Plymouth had battled well for a goalless draw in the original tie at Anfield, and mostly managed to keep their Premier League opponents at bay on Wednesday night.

But despite Divock Origi seeing a penalty saved late on, Liverpool eventually got through the tie and into the next round, where they will face Wolves at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes from the side that drew with Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, with Philippe Coutinho returning to the starting line-up for the first time since recovering from his injury.

And it was the little Brazilian who set up the opener, putting the corner in for compatriot Lucas to crash home a header in the 18th minute - his first goal in more than six years.

Plymouth weren't too disheartened, however, and immediately took the game to their Premier League opponents.

Their best chance to level in the first half came after 33 minute as Oscar Threlkeld burst down the right before attempting to pick out Arnold Garita in the middle. And it so nearly reached the striker, who would have had a simple finish, but Trent Alexander-Arnold managed to scramble back and nick it off his toe, with his touch just rolling wide of the post.

Plymouth came out brightly at the start of the second half, but took until the 75th minute to create a real chance for themselves. A long ball forward found Jake Jervis in the box via the head of Sonny Bradley, but his acrobatic effort clipped the outside of the post before going just wide.

Liverpool then had the chance to kill the game in the 89th minute as Yann Songo'o gave away a penalty with a needless foul on Alberto Moreno, but Divock Origi's effort was poor and Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick guessed right to keep it out.

But there just wasn't enough time for Plymouth to carve themselves out another chance, and Liverpool held on to win their first game of 2017.

Southampton 1-0 Norwich: Shane Long strikes in stoppage time to set up Arsenal tie

By Gerard Brand
Last Updated: 18/01/17 10:01pm

Shane Long struck in stoppage time to give Southampton a 1-0 win over Norwich in their FA Cup third-round replay, setting up a home tie with Arsenal.

Long struck on the rebound in the second minute of stoppage time having initially seen his header saved by Michael McGovern after Saints had peppered Norwich's goal in the second half.

Long went close twice after a dire first half, while Nathan Redmond had also forced McGovern into a save as Norwich looked to hold on for extra-time.

Southampton will play Arsenal at St Mary's on Saturday, January 28 at 5.30pm.

Former Norwich forward Redmond spurned three fine second-half chances as this tie looked to be heading for extra-time, only for Long to produce his rescue act.

A dire first-half served up just one morsel for the paltry and wholly-underwhelmed crowd.

Sam McQueen's shot was tipped onto the post by McGovern, before bouncing to safety.

The distinct lack of movement from statuesque forward pairing Jay Rodriguez and Long undermined every Saints attack.

Cuco Martina and Josh Sims grafted manfully enough down the right, but to entirely no avail.

The hosts upped the tempo after the break, but that was hardly any challenge. Sims' low cross forced Ivo Pinto to turn the ball round the post, before Rodriguez flicked the ball across the face of goal.

Just when Saints sniffed the faintest scent of blood, Norwich broke with two quick passes. Kyle Lafferty just failed to connect with Josh Murphy's teasing cross though, letting the home side off the hook.

James Ward-Prowse curled a smart free-kick just wide, with the rippling netting tricking the home faithful into thinking the midfielder had made the breakthrough.

Replacement and ex-Norwich man Redmond then fluffed three fine openings for victory, all in the final stages.

First he failed to dig the ball properly from under his feet with a shot, then he fired too close to McGovern. And most wasteful of all, he scuffed wide from 12 yards.

Long failed to gain any purchase attempting a header on Redmond's cross, as Saints finally found fluency at the death.

And just when the clash looked odds-on for extra time, McQueen's cross let Long grind the ball over the line for the winner.
