Newcastle United have agreed a £13 million fee for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn.

The Athletic has reported that Newcastle have had two bids for Burn knocked back by Brighton already this month, as they look to add a centre-back to their squad.

Newcastle’s initial offer of around £8 million was rebuffed earlier this week and a second bid, believed to be around £10 million before add-ons, was also turned down on Saturday.

There are still elements of the deal that need to be ironed out but Newcastle are optimistic. A senior club source told The Athletic: “It’s not done but we’re hopeful we can get there.”

Burn, 29, has emerged as Eddie Howe’s primary defensive target after moves for Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos failed to materialise.

Burn, who is from Blyth, Northumberland, and is a boyhood Newcastle fan, is thought to be receptive to returning home.

Signing a left-sided centre-half has been a target for Newcastle for several windows. Burn’s ability to play as a left-back and left wing-back therefore make him an even more attractive proposition.

Ideally, Newcastle would also recruit a second centre-back by Monday's deadline, too.

Brighton have agreed a £13m deal with Newcastle for central defender Dan Burn to return to his native North East.

Newcastle had targeted Burn, a boyhood Magpies fan, to bolster their defence.

The Seagulls had previously rejected a £7m bid from the Magpies for the 29-year-old, who is 6ft 7in and can play in central defence or at left-back.

A fee has now been reached, although League One side Wigan are due around 20% of the profit made from their £4m sale of the player in 2018.

Burn is a Newcastle fan, having been born in nearby Blyth and was at the Magpies as a youngster before starting his senior career with Darlington.

He has played 85 times for Brighton.

Newcastle, who are in the relegation zone, have signed Burnley striker Chris Wood for £25m and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier for £12m in the current transfer window.

They are also thought to be close to signing Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £35m.

Newcastle United are delighted to confirm the signing of Ashington-born defender Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old centre-back arrives at his boyhood club after signing a two-and-a-half-year contract and becomes Eddie Howe's fifth acquisition of the January transfer window.

Burn was originally part of the Magpies' youth set-up before being released aged eleven, and he returns to the club almost two decades later having become an established Premier League defender.

Burn said: "I'm buzzing to be here. I never thought I'd be in this position so to be a Newcastle player and to be around St. James' Park, it's something I've dreamt of since I was a kid.

"I can't wait to step out in the shirt and to see what it feels like. From sitting in the East Stand as a kid to now, it's crazy. I'm excited to get started."

Eddie Howe said: "I'm delighted to bring Dan back to the North East. He knows exactly what it means to represent this club and he will be a big presence for us on and off the pitch.

"We have been very keen to add competition defensively and Dan fits the profile we have been looking for. He is naturally left-footed, which provides further balance to our backline, and he will be a great addition to the group."

After being released by the Magpies as a youngster, Burn began his ascent into the professional game with spells at clubs including Blyth Spartans and Darlington, eventually making his Football League debut for the Quakers in 2009.
