Roma sporting director Monchi says the club remain hopeful of striking a deal with Leicester to sign Riyad Mahrez.

Sky in Italy understand a third offer of £31.8m - a Roma club record - has recently been rejected by the Foxes, following previous bids of £20m and £27m.

The Serie A club have been after Mahrez all summer while the 26-year-old has confirmed he wants to leave, and highly-rated recruiter Monchi has praised his club's efforts in trying to bring him to the Italian capital.

"I'm optimistic in life, by nature. Roma is doing everything possible to take the player," Monchi said at the unveiling of another new signing, Gregoire Defrel.

"I am happy with the effort the club is making to take him. It is close to the limit. I do not think the club has often bid over 30m Euros.

"If my memory does not deceive me, the latest offer would be the club's most expensive purchase in our history. We are, therefore, engaged and expect an answer. But it is true that we are working on other solutions.

"When we find an agreement, whether with Leicester or another company for another footballer, we will have nothing to rebuke because we are really doing everything.

"The player has expressed his will publicly, but he is right to respect his club. In the end all will be resolved according to Leicester's will to accept it or not."

Mahrez, 26, shone for Leicester during their momentous Premier League title-winning season in 2015/16 but had an inconsistent time of it in the last campaign.

He has scored 35 goals in over 100 appearances for Leicester since a £560,000 move from French Ligue 2 side Le Havre in 2014.

Roma's previous transfer record is the £22.5m paid for Gabriel Batistuta from Fiorentina in 2000.

NEW MAHREZ BID

Roma are set to make a new offer to Leicester City for Riyad Mahrez, according to Sky in Italy.

This will be their fourth bid for the Algerian and we are told it will be made later today.

Leicester have repeatedly said they do not want to sell the former PFA Player of the Year, despite Mahrez handing in a transfer request.

The Italian club's third bid of £32m was rejected out of hand, and even though reports in Italy believe a bid of £40m would be enough to secure his signature, Sky Sources understand that would still be well below Leicester's valuation of the player.

We've been told Mahrez's preference is to move to a club in the Premier League, as his family is settled in England.

But he will continue to fight for Leicester, if no suitable transfer materialises.

ROMA READY FOURTH MAHREZ BID

Roma are preparing a fourth bid for Riyad Mahrez, according to our Sky colleagues in Italy.

Their last bid of £32m was rejected by Leicester - that is way below the Foxes' valuation.

Mahrez has been training as normal and he's expected to start against Arsenal on FNF.

We understand the player would like to speak to Roma, but ideally he would like to stay in England, with Arsenal still a possible destination.

Roma have told Leicester they must hear back by August 15 over their club-record £31.8m bid for Foxes playmaker Riyad Mahrez, according to Sky in Italy.

If the Serie A club do not receive a response from Leicester's Thai owners by midnight on Tuesday they will withdraw their interest completely in the Algeria winger and turn their attention elsewhere.

The Giallorossi had other bids of £20m and £27m rejected, and have been chasing Mahrez all summer after the 26-year-old confirmed he wanted to leave the King Power.

Sky in Italy are reporting Riyad Mahrez’s agent is trying to persuade Roma to increase their bid to £40m including add-ons.

The Serie A club have so far offered £31.8m and have no plans to bid again for the Leicester winger.

They have imposed a deadline of midnight on Tuesday for Leicester to respond to their last offer. They will then move on to alternative targets.

Leicester rejects Roma's latest offer for Mahrez: the situation

With about two weeks left in the summer transfer window, Roma continues to work on signing an offensive weapon.
But the giallorossi's latest offer to Leicester for Riyad Mahrez was rejected, Monchi had raised the bid to ?37 million but the Foxes ownership are firm in their request for 40 million pounds.
At this point it remains to be seen if Roma will continue to pursue alternatives or if they will make another attempt for Mahrez before the end of the transfer period.

After failing to convince Leicester to sell Mahrez despite an offer of ?37 million, Roma is now working on some alternatives. Director Monchi is pursuing Barcelona's Munir as well as Spartak Moscow's Quincy Promes while the odds of signing Juan Cuadrado are very low since so far Juventus won't consider letting the Colombian winger go. Real Madrid's Lucas Vazquez is still on Monchi's list, so it still remains to be seen who will arrive to reinforce Di Francesco's attack.
