The versatile winger is a key target for Jose Mourinho. United's latest bid is 45 million euros plus bonuses however it was rejected by Inter.

Manchester United will try to sign Ivan Perisic before Internazionale fly to China for their pre-season tour next Tuesday, with the forward valued at around ?55m (£49m).

It is understood United price the Croat at closer to £40m and so the fee may be about £45m. Luciano Spalletti, the Inter manager, wants the player to stay but Perisic is intent on a move to Old Trafford.

José Mourinho is keen to reinforce his forward line with the 28-year-old who largely operates in wide positions. The United manager remains doubtful about the quality of Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard. He complained about their lack of cutting edge on several occasions last season. Perisic can also play in a central attacking role.

Inter, who have signed Fiorentina’s Borja Valero, leave for China on 18 July and play Schalke in Changzhou on 22 July.

Perisic linked up with Inter for their pre-season camp at Riscone di Brunico but if the transfer is completed in time Mourinho may ask him to fly to the USA. United are in a training camp at Los Angeles’s UCLA complex. Their five-match tour begins with Saturday’s friendly against LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center.

Man Utd keen to reach quick agreement for Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan

Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to sign Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, Sky sources understand.

Sky Sports News HQ understands United are getting closer to a deal for Perisic, but Inter are sticking to their £48m asking price for the Croatia international.

Perisic has joined up with the rest of the Inter squad at their training camp in the north of Italy but United are trying to do a deal before the Serie A club flies to China next week.

Their most recent offer for Perisic is understood to have been £39m but Sky Sports News HQ understands they will need to increase that to around £45m to secure their target, who has three years left on his current contract.

He was due to meet with Inter boss Luciano Spalletti last week to talk over his future, with Spalletti saying: "You keep talking about Perisic and his desire to leave but I need to listen to his own words first and then decide how to act.

"I hope to have him in the side, I am counting on it and I am positive in that sense."

Perisic has been playing in Italy since the summer of 2015, scoring 18 goals in 70 Serie A games since joining them from German club Wolfsburg two games into the 2015-16 season.

The 28-year-old has also scored 16 goals in 57 games for his country.

‘PERISIC NOT JOINING UNITED’

Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio insists Ivan Perisic is not joining Manchester United.

Speaking from Inter’s alpine pre-season training camp, Ausilio told Sky Sport Italy: "It's not going to happen.

“He is training very well with us. We have not considered anything they have offered."

Inter Milan have asked Man United about the possibility of taking France forward Anthony Martial as part of the Ivan Perisic deal, according to Sky in Italy.
