New Roma sporting director Monchi has announced that Francesco Totti, the club legend, will hang up his boots at the end of the season. Totti, 40, made his senior derby with the Giallorossi in 1993, and has gone on to become the second highest scorer in the history of Serie A. But with Totti's contract set to expire this summer, the Spaniard, at his unveiling on Wednesday, confirmed his retirement is imminent. “In terms of Totti, I already knew that there was an agreement with the club that this would be his final year as a player, then he’d start as a director,” said Monchi. “Francesco is Roma, I want to be as close to him as possible. I’d love to learn even one per cent of the huge amount that he knows.” Roma's season ends against Genoa on May 28, at the Stadio Olimpico.
Totti has made 783 appearances for Roma since his debut, scoring 307 goals during his one-club career.
Italy won the World Cup in 2006 with Totti starring and keeping his cool to convert a stoppage time penalty to down Australia in the Last 16.
Thriving in behind Luca Toni, Totti added three assists during the tournament and made the all-star squad of the tournament.
