Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has confirmed that his club has not held talks with Manchester United over the transfer of Alvaro Morata.

"I believe we are not negotiating with Manchester United, which does not mean that there are not people around him who are talking, which is normal," Perez told El Primer Palo radio.

"I have read that we have reached an agreement for I don't know how many million Euros, but it is not true."

Alvaro Morata’s father and agent held face-to-face talks with Real Madrid chiefs on Monday as the Spain striker bids to push through a move to Manchester United before the club fly to the US on Sunday for the start of their pre-season tour.

Juanma Lopez, Morata’s representative, and the player’s father, Alfonso Morata, arrived at the Bernabeu around 11am for a meeting with Real officials as they sought a compromise over the fee.

According to AS, the Spanish sports newspaper, talks lasted just under a hour, although it was unclear on Monday if the parties reached an agreement there and then over Morata’s valuation.

Real have been holding out for at least £75 million, which is more than United have been willing to pay for the 24 year-old, who scored 20 goals in 43 appearances last season.

Morata took a short break from his honeymoon last week to fly to Madrid in an effort to speed up a proposed move to Old Trafford.

The striker is as eager as United manager Jose Mourinho for a deal to be wrapped up before the club fly to Los Angeles at the weekend but Real have been playing hard ball, conscious of United’s desperation for a target man in the wake of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s long-term injury.

United remain optimistic that a deal will be struck this week and Mourinho is desperate to avoid the situation dragging on, with Sweden defender Victor Lindelof the club’s only summer arrival so far.

Manchester United are set to make an improved offer of ?75m (£65.8m) to Real Madrid for Álvaro Morata as José Mourinho steps up his attempt to replace the departed Zlatan Ibrahimovic for next season.

Negotiations with Real have been in progress for several weeks, with United having seen two offers of ?60m (£52.3m) and ?70m (£60m) turned down at the start of June as the Champions League winners value him significantly higher at ?90m.

Having identified the Spain striker as his transfer priority for this window with Wayne Rooney close to agreeing a move to Everton, Mourinho is understood to have grown frustrated over the lack of new arrivals having so far only completed the £30m signing of Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

United are due to fly out for their pre-season tour of America on Sunday and the Portuguese is hopeful that the deal for Morata, who he coached during his spell at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, could still be completed in time for him to join up with his new team-mates.

The frosty relationship that exists between them and the reigning European champions has not helped matters, with United insistent that goalkeeper David de Gea will not be leaving Old Trafford this summer.

However, with the new offer edging closer to Real’s valuation, it is believed that they could be close to accepting a deal that would see Morata leave the club for the second time in his career, having first moved to Juventus in 2014.

He is already understood to have told Real that he wants to join United and has agreed personal terms on a contract worth around £4m a season.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that United have also rekindled their interest in signing Everton’s Romelu Lukaku but is understood that Morata, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, remains Mourinho’s preferred option.
