Everton will hold further talks with Nuno Espírito Santo this weekend that could conclude with the former Wolves manager being appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.

Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s majority shareholder, and the director of football, Marcel Brands, have assessed several candidates following Ancelotti’s surprise return to Real Madrid 10 days ago and are believed to be close to an agreement with the Portuguese coach.

Negotiations remain to be concluded on issues such as the size of Nuno’s coaching staff – part of the reason Crystal Palace withdrew their interest in the 47-year-old this week – but providing talks run smoothly Moshiri could appoint the former Valencia and Porto coach next week. The influence of Nuno’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is another potential complication for a club whose transfers are handled mainly by Brands.

Nuno’s availability having left Wolves at the end of last season made him an attractive proposition for Everton as soon as Ancelotti exited, and he was sounded out shortly afterwards. The former Everton manager David Moyes was another candidate who interested the club’s hierarchy but he has agreed a new three-year contract with West Ham.

Nuno returned to the top of Moshiri’s wish-list after the breakdown of his proposed move to Palace, and with Moyes committed to West Ham. He would be Everton’s sixth permanent manager in the past five years.

Everton are continuing to explore candidates to succeed Carlo Ancelotti - with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez still under consideration, along with Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno, who left Wolves in May, is still favourite to replace Ancelotti.

Discussions are on-going with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and the rest of the club's hierarchy.

Benitez, however, remains in contention and has also held rounds of talks with Everton.

He could yet become the first man to manage both Merseyside clubs, following a six-year spell at Liverpool in which he won the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Everton are determined not to rush any appointment and while Nuno remains a strong contender after talks that started shortly after Ancelotti's departure for Real Madrid, the club are determined to cast their net wide before making a final choice.

Benitez's appointment would be contentious as many Everton fans were angered when Benitez described them as a "small club" following a drawn Merseyside derby.

The Spaniard, who still lives in the area, is understood to be keen on the challenge of reviving Everton and believes his methods would win over sceptical supporters.

He received a hostile reception when he was appointed interim manager at Chelsea in November 2012 following their intense rivalry with Liverpool, but ended up taking them to third place in the Premier League and winning the Europa League.

Benitez last managed in the Premier League at Newcastle United, where he was a hugely popular figure with fans, before moving to China for a spell at Dalian Professional.

Rafael Benitez: Everton hope to appoint ex-Liverpool manager within days

Everton are hopeful of confirming Rafael Benitez as Carlo Ancelotti's successor within days.

Former Liverpool manager Benitez, 61, has held several rounds of negotiations with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and the club's decision makers over the last two weeks.

The Spaniard has impressed enough for them to ignore a mixed reaction from their fanbase to his proposed arrival.

Ancelotti resigned in early June to return to Real Madrid

Benitez's arrival would be a contentious and controversial one as many Everton fans remain opposed to him after he described them as a "small club" following a goalless Merseyside derby at Anfield in February 2007.

The Spaniard later admitted he had made a mistake, saying he was referring to the defensive approach of David Moyes' team in that particular game rather than Everton as a club.

Contract talks between Everton and Benitez are moving ahead and it now looks certain that, barring any late hitches, he will become only the second man to manage both Merseyside clubs having won the Champions League and the FA Cup in a six-year spell at Anfield before his departure in 2010.

William Edward Barclay, who was part of the original foundation of Everton in the 1890s and later the breakaway Liverpool club, is the only person to have crossed the city divide to manage both clubs.

The pursuit of Benitez has been a delicate matter for Everton owner Moshiri, drawing criticism from many supporters and seeing two banners placed outside Goodison Park.

However, the Iranian-British businessman is convinced that Benitez is driven, determined and single-minded enough to take the club back into Europe after finishing 10th under Ancelotti last season.

Benitez last managed in the Premier League at Newcastle United before leaving in June 2019 to move to China as coach of Dalian Professional, who he left in January.

He still lives locally and is convinced his methods and track record will win over sceptical supporters.

Benitez is no stranger to walking into a potentially hostile environment after the reception he received when he took over as Chelsea's interim manager in November 2012 following a long, intense rivalry when he was in charge of Liverpool.

The Spaniard was roundly jeered when he took charge for his first game at home to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge - but was a resounding success, winning the Europa League and guiding them to third place in the Premier League.

Moshiri is now hoping he will spark a similar revival at Goodison Park.

英國傳媒報導，賓尼迪斯默西塞德郡的住所外被掛上一面寫上「We know where you live. Don't sign.（我哋知你住邊，唔好簽約）」的橫額，相信橫額是針對賓尼迪斯執教愛華頓的傳聞。據報賓尼迪斯目前正和太太和兩個女兒同住該處，至於當地警方就表示，正調查這宗恐嚇橫額的案件。
