Abou Diaby faces another spell on the sidelines after Marseille confirmed the midfielder will be out for four months after an ankle operation.

The French club revealed the former Arsenal midfielder underwent an operation in London after complaining of pains in his right ankle for several weeks.

His estimated time out means he is unlikely to return before the end of February.

"For several weeks, midfielder Abou Diaby has been suffering with a right ankle problem. Given the persistence of the pain and that it was impossible for him to train, the medical staff decided surgery was necessary," a statement on the French club's official website read.

"Olympique de Marseille wishes Abou a speedy recovery and hopes to see him back on the pitch as soon as possible," the statement added.

The 30-year-old has had aninjury plagued career since breaking his ankle in a challenge with Sunderland's Dan Smith in May 2006 during his first season with Arsenal.

Diaby, who won the last of his 16 caps for France in September 2012, has made just six appearances for Marseille since signing in the summer of last year, most recently in a defeat at Guingamp in August.

He made just three appearances in Ligue 1 last term and has made two appearances this season.
