Steve Bruce is understood to be the leading candidate for the vacant Aston Villa manager's job, closely followed by current interim boss Steve Clarke.

Sky sources understand that both men are in contention, but the struggling Sky Bet Championship club, who sacked Roberto Di Matteo after just 12 games last week, are yet to hold talks with either candidate.

Bruce resigned from Hull City in the summer following a dispute over transfer policy and was among the candidates to take over as England manager following Euro 2016. He previously managed Villa's city rivals Birmingham.

Clarke was Di Matteo's assistant since they were appointed by the club's new Chinese owner Tony Xia in the summer.

It is understood the club are hoping to make an appointment before next week's clash with west Midland rivals Wolves.

Earlier on Friday, Huddersfield Town's German manager David Wagner, who has guided the Terriers to the top of the Championship, was seemingly ruled out of the running by the Yorkshire club's chairman Dean Hoyle.

Hoyle said in a club statement: "David has told me that he would never leave us for another Championship club, regardless of which club that is."

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has also distanced himself from the job.

Villa, who have been through three different managers inside 12 months and were relegated from the Premier League in May, sit 19th in the second tier with one win and seven defeats from 11 league games.

Former Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce has held talks with Aston Villa and he remains favourite to fill their managerial vacancy.

Villa sacked Roberto di Matteo on Monday, with the club 19th in the Championship and winless in nine games.

Bruce, 55, has been without a club since leaving Hull City, but was interviewed by the Football Association for the England job in July.

He has won promotion to the Premier League four times as a manager.

Di Matteo's assistant Steve Clarke remains in caretaker charge at Villa, and the club's next match is at home to West Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on 15 October.

Former Birmingham midfielder Robbie Savage, who played under Bruce at St Andrew's, described him as the "right man" to take over at Villa Park.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy, Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner and Bristol City's Lee Johnson have all also been linked with the Villa job, but Wagner and Johnson have ruled themselves out of the running.

Aston Villa: Steve Bruce set to be appointed as manager

Steve Bruce is set to be named as the new manager of Championship side Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Bruce, 55, left Hull City in July and will succeed Roberto di Matteo, who was sacked on 3 October, at Villa Park.

The club's owner and chairman Dr Tony Xia tweeted to say an announcement will be made, adding: "Time for all to stand together and back the team. Believe we've made the best try."

Villa are 19th in the league table and host Wolves on Saturday.

Shortly after Dr Xia's tweet, Bruce appeared as a pundit on ITV Sport and said: "All I can say is I think I'm in the frame. I'm expecting a phone call tomorrow and we will see what comes from there."

Aston Villa: Steve Bruce appointed manager of Championship club

Aston Villa have named former Hull City and Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce as their new manager.

Former Manchester United captain Bruce, 55, who left Hull in July, succeeds Roberto di Matteo, who was sacked on 3 October, at Villa Park.

Bruce, who has lived in the Midlands since first joining Birmingham as a player in 1996, takes over with Villa 19th in the Championship table.

His first game in charge is at home to local rivals Wolves on Saturday.

Bruce will become the sixth man to pick the Villa team inside the last 12 months.

He then has matches against Reading and Fulham before returning to St Andrew's for the Blues-Villa derby on Sunday, 30 October in only his second away match.

"It is one of the big clubs of this country," said Bruce. "To be given the opportunity to manage it is terrific.

"I relish the challenge of trying to take the club where it wants to go and needs to be - and try to turn around the misfortune we seem to have had over the past few years."

Villa will begin life under Bruce 10 points behind Birmingham, the team occupying the last of the four play-off places in sixth.
