Michael Carrick is considering moving abroad over fears he will not be offered a new deal at Manchester United, sources have told ESPN FC.

Carrick, 34, has a deal at United which expires this summer and the club have yet to open talks over a contract extension at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has been a key member of the United side since joining from Tottenham in 2006, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League, but has struggled to hold down a first-team place with the arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger last summer increasing competition for places.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the delay in contract talks with United has alerted a number of Premier League clubs to Carrick's possible availability on a free transfer at the end of the season and some are actively monitoring his situation.

However, sources also said that Carrick is willing to consider offers outside Europe with Major League Soccer clubs and sides from the Middle East also showing interest in signing him.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick does not know whether he will still be at Old Trafford next season.

The contract of the 34-year-old, who joined from Tottenham for £18.6m 10 years ago, expires in the summer.

United's vice-captain is the second longest-serving United player behind Wayne Rooney and has featured 28 times under Louis van Gaal this season.

Asked about his situation, Carrick said: "Honestly, I don't know. There's no news at all. I've heard nothing really, so I can't comment at this stage."

After steering United as skipper in Rooney's absence to a 3-2 win over Arsenal on Super Sunday, he responded to a question on whether he was content to leave the unresolved contract issues until the end of the season.

He said: "I just want to enjoy tonight first."

Carrick spent six years at the start of his career with West Ham before moving to Spurs in 2004 after loan spells with Swindon and Birmingham.

Everton have joined the list of clubs hoping to sign Michael Carrick this summer if he fails to sign a new contract with Manchester United.
The England international is the subject of interest from clubs in Europe but Everton manager Roberto Martinez is an admirer of Carrick and would want to speak to him about his plans if he fails to extend his 10-year stay at Old Trafford.
Carrick revealed last month that United have not approached him over a new deal and there is no sign of talks opening at any time soon.
The 34-year-old has seen his game time limited at times this season and has failed to hold down a regular spot in Louis van Gaal's ever-changing side.
United have been proactive with older players in the past, tying stars down to one-year extensions in a bid to keep experienced heads inside the dressing room.
But Everton may see him as a potential replacement for Gareth Barry, whose contract runs out at the end of the next season.
The former England international has been an ever-present since joining the club but it's unclear if the club plan on extending his stay at Goodison Park.

Jose Mourinho is ready to sanction a one-year contract for Michael Carrick at Manchester United this week following confirmation of Marcus Rashford’s decision to sign a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

Carrick, who will be 35 by the start of the 2016-17 season in August, had been set to leave the club this summer with previous manager Louis van Gaal failing to confirm a contract extension for the midfielder, whose current deal expires on June 30.

But with Mourinho replacing the sacked Van Gaal last week, the Portuguese is understood to be keen to retain the experience and versatility of Carrick, who made 42 first-team appearances for United in the season just ended.

The former England international has received offers from the United States and China, with Premier League clubs also interested in the player, who arrived at Old Trafford from Tottenham in an £18.6m transfer in July 2006.

But Carrick favours an extended stay at United, with the prospect of a 12-month contract extension also offering the potential of a testimonial game in 2017, and is due for talks with the club this week.

"I'm hopeful [of staying]," Carrick said. "There is no news as yet, but we'll have to wait and see what happens next week.”

United, meanwhile, have secured the services of England forward Rashford, 18, and emerging left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, 19, on contracts until 2020 -- both containing the option of a further year.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has agreed a new one-year contract with the club.

The 34-year-old has been at Old Trafford since signing from Tottenham in July 2006 and made 42 appearances last season.

"I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing. It's great to have the opportunity to work under Jose Mourinho," he said.

"I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support."

Carrick's previous deal - signed back in November 2013 - was set to expire at the end of this month and he had been approached by A-League side Perth Glory about a possible move to Australia.

But manager Mourinho sees Carrick as a useful asset as he prepares for his his first season at United.

"Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me," said the Portuguese.

"I am really looking forward to working with him."

Carrick shared the holding midfield role with Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger last season.

Manchester United had been linked with midfielder Renato Sanches before the 18-year-old completed a move to Bayern Munich in May.
