Everton keen on Carlo Ancelotti, but may face competition from Arsenal after Italian is sacked by Napoli

Carlo Ancelotti is Everton’s new top choice to replace Marco Silva as manager after the Italian was sacked by Napoli on Tuesday night.

Arsenal could provide strong competition to the Merseyside club in their pursuit of Ancelotti, who was dismissed despite securing Napoli's place in the Champions League last 16 with a 4-0 win over Genk.

Everton had been in talks with Vitor Pereira over a 2½-year contract to succeed Silva, but he decided to rule himself out after receiving a counter offer from his Chinese club Shanghai SIPG.

Everton are now ready to make an approach to Ancelotti, whose availability could also bring Arsenal into the equation. Mikel Arteta, who is assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, had been considered the favourite for the Arsenal post.

But Ancelotti’s availability, together with Everton’s plan to offer him their job, will certainly grab Arsenal’s attention.

Ancelotti, 60, is understood to be open to the prospect of a return to England and he may want to gauge the strength of Arsenal’s interest before accepting an Everton offer.

It is over eight years since Ancelotti was harshly sacked by Chelsea after winning the Premier League and FA Cup during his two seasons there. He has since managed Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He joined Napoli in May last year, replacing Maurizio Sarri. Despite leading Napoli to ­second place in Serie A behind Juventus in his first season, Ancelotti has been forced to deal with problems behind the scenes.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, the chairman, is notoriously difficult to deal with, having fallen out with a number of managers, including Sarri.

Italian sources had tipped Ancelotti to leave regardless of the result against Genk, with Gennaro Gattuso expected to replace him.

Pereira held talks with the Everton hierarchy and it was hoped an appointment would be made by the end of this week on a 2½-year deal.

However, the 51-year-old, who earns ?23 million (£19.3 million) a year at Shanghai SIPG, has decided he does not want to take over at Goodison Park.

“It’s always an honour and I am utterly grateful to be considered on a list by a club that I have so much respect for,” Pereira said.

“At this point, I am still the coach of SIPG, a club close to my heart in a country that is growing immensely in football. Currently, I am not in a position to make any other commitments. I cannot decide now, I need time to think and plan my future by looking to all the options I have. It’s a league I love and, yes, for sure, I would consider an opportunity in the future.”

Everton have spoken with former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery, who could move up the club’s wishlist if they miss out on Ancelotti.

Mauricio Pochettino is also highly admired, but it would be a big surprise if the Argentine returned to management at Goodison Park.

Everton are continuing to weigh up their options as they seek a successor to Marco Silva - with former manager David Moyes still figuring heavily in discussions.

Shanghai SIPG coach Vitor Pereira withdrew his interest on Tuesday in favour of staying in China.

The Portuguese was under consideration but Everton had made no firm decision on whether to appoint him.

Owner Farhad Moshiri must now look at other options - including Moyes.

The ambitious billionaire is sure to investigate the possibility of Carlo Ancelotti's availability after the 60-year-old Italian was sacked by Napoli despite guiding them to the Champions League knockout phase.

Everton also held informal talks with Unai Emery after he was sacked by Arsenal but that has gone no further at this stage, while Bournemouth's Eddie Howe has admirers in the Goodison Park boardroom.

The possibility of Ancelotti being tempted to Goodison Park is remote, with Arsenal also casting an eye over his situation, while others like Howe and Manchester City assistant manager Mikel Arteta are unlikely to want to leave their respective clubs in mid-season.

Duncan Ferguson's spectacular impact on and off the pitch galvanised Everton's support with the 3-1 win against Chelsea - but the possibility remains that the more experienced 56-year-old Moyes could yet be invited back.

Moyes has been under consideration for a return in come capacity since well before Silva's sacking but Everton's board hesitated after fans reacted angrily to the possibility.

The Scot, however, is still very much in the frame and could yet return to the job he left for Manchester United in 2013, most likely in an interim capacity.

Pereira told Sky Sports News he was "grateful" to be considered for the role, but was "still coach of SIPG and SIPG is a club close to my heart".

His fellow Portuguese Silva was sacked after 18 months in charge following the 5-2 Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

Carlo Ancelotti is Everton's first choice to be their new manager with the Toffees set to intensify their attempts to secure a deal for the Italian.

However, reports that the 60-year-old was on Merseyside on Monday to hold talks were wide of the mark.

Ancelotti was sacked by Napoli after taking them into the Champions League knockout stages.

A statement from Everton said the club had "held meetings with a number of candidates".

"We can confirm that thus far no contract offer has been made and no candidate has chosen to withdraw from the process," added the statement.

"While the club is keen to confirm a new permanent manager as soon as possible, the only important duty is that the right appointment is made.

"While our process continues, Duncan Ferguson will remain as caretaker manager and will take charge of the side for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City."

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri sees three-time Champions League winner Ancelotti as a big name to underline his ambitions.

It would be regarded as a major coup should he actually pull it off and it is understood talks have already taken place.

Everton will now move to set up further face-to-face discussions in a bid to persuade the Italian, who won the Premier League and FA Cup Double at Chelsea in 2010, to make a swift return to football on Merseyside.

Ancelotti is not the only option for Everton. Former manager David Moyes is also under consideration, although his name met with a negative reaction from supporters. RB Leipzig's head of sport Ralf Rangnick has also been touted as he was a candidate to succeed Moyes when he left for Manchester United in 2013.

Mikel Arteta was another with admirers among Everton's hierarchy, although it now looks more likely he will leave his role as Manchester City assistant manager to take over at Arsenal, after holding talks with the Gunners.

Duncan Ferguson, meanwhile, will continue in his role as caretaker manager for the Carabao Cup quarter-final at home to Leicester on Wednesday.

Such has been his spectacular impact on and off the pitch in getting four points from two tough league games against Chelsea and Manchester United, he is assured of a key role even if a new manager comes in.

Carlo Ancelotti is on a path to becoming the new coach at Everton after positive contacts continued over the last few hours. The face-to-face meeting was very positive, and a deal between them is set to be closed: there is not much distance between the sides, although there are details still to resolve. The deal is not yet completed, and nor have Ancelotti and his staff have yet sought resolution of their ex-club, Napoli.
