Inter Milan 0-1 Sassuolo: Inter slump to home defeat Last Updated: 10/01/16 2:40pm
Inter Milan's Serie A title hopes were dented by Sassuolo, who clinched a dramatic 1-0 win at the San Siro thanks to the heroics of their goalkeeper Andrea Consigli and an injury-time penalty from Domenico Berardi. Inter started Sunday at the top of Serie A, but were unable to defeat Eusebio Di Francesco's team despite dominating the game in Milan. With 10 seconds of the five additional minutes remaining, Berardi confidently stroked the ball past Samir Handanovic after Inter defender Joao Miranda had fouled Gregoire Defrel in the box. Berardi may have scored the decisive penalty, but in reality it was goalkeeper Consigli who won the match for the underdogs.
Consigli conceded seven goals without reply the last time Sassuolo played at Inter, but on Sunday the 28-year-old stopper produced a commanding display.
Just before half-time, Adem Ljajic was convinced he had broken the deadlock when he bent a right-foot curler towards the far corner, but Consigli dived athletically to his left and somehow tipped the shot around the post.
Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic also missed good chances to put Inter ahead in the first half.
At the other end, Handanovic was kept busy by Nicola Sansone, who almost turned the ball into his own net - but the Inter goalkeeper rescued his own defender.
It was the Sassuolo keeper who was the real star of the show, however.
Consigli saved brilliantly again from Ljajic after the restart and once more to deny Stevan Jovetic.
Ljajic tried to find the net again, but Consigli tipped his effort over the bar.
Then, with the game seemingly destined to end in a draw, Miranda felled Defrel in the box and Berardi sent Handanovic the wrong way to seal the win for the visitors.
