Manchester United agree new contract with David de GeaMan Utd goalkeeper David de Gea is a long-term target for Champions League winners Real Madrid - but is set to commit his future to Old Trafford
David de Gea has agreed a new five-year deal with Manchester United. The Spanish international will end constant talk of a move to Real Madrid by committing his future to Old Trafford.
Champions League winners Real have long-hoped to lure De Gea back to his homeland, with president Florentino Perez accepting it would take a world-record fee for a goalkeeper of £100m to take him to the Bernabeu.
United have always remained adamant they would not sell their prize asset - and were confident he would not agitate to leave. But that has not stopped near-constant links with a move to Real, who came so close to landing him in 2015.
Only a deadline day administrative error prevented De Gea from heading to the Spanish giants back then. Shortly after he signed a new four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.
Jose Mourinho has ruled out any chance of allowing his No.1 to leave this summer, with United intent on triggering his option. regardless of whether a fresh contract was agreed.De Gea was asked about his future this week - but was coy.
“I don’t think Florentino Pérez has my number,” he told El Partidazo de Cope. “I don’t know if I’ll be the goalkeeper at Real Madrid.
“What I do know is that I’m very happy in Manchester. What I want is to win titles, like every other player.
“There’s no lacking in winning titles there (United) - we have to improve.
“We are a big club, we are not here to take second place. We have to improve and make this club great.”
