Danny Rose left out of Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia as he edges closer to departure



Danny Rose will not travel with the Tottenham Hotspur squad to Singapore on Wednesday for the club’s pre-season tour in Asia and instead the left-back will stay behind in England with a view to him being sold.

Rose, 29, is valued at around £25 million with two years left on his deal at Spurs and has been available since last summer although there is yet to be a committed buyer. The latest development, that for the time being will see him prepare for the new season without his team-mates, demonstrates that club and player both see this as potentially the end of their 12-year association.

Everton showed interest in Rose last summer although Lucas Digne, signed from Barcelona, has since been a success in Rose’s position. Rose has said that he favours a move back to the north, near where he grew up in South Yorkshire, and he was once a target for Manchester United although that is no longer a possibility. So too at Manchester City where the club have activated the buy-back clause on the Spanish left-back Angelino to sign him from PSV Eindhoven.

Rose’s impressive end to last season means that both parties are confident there should be interest in him. Should there be no offer that is acceptable to club and player then Rose will be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s first team squad for the start of next season. There has been no falling out between the player and club and he has been granted a longer break than many of his England international team-mates who also played in the Nations League last month.

Spurs travel first to Singapore where on Sunday they play Juventus, a club who have also looked at Rose in the past. The squad then travel on to Shanghai where they play Manchester United a week on Thursday. Those players who have represented their countries at the African Cup of Nations and Copa America, including Victor Wanyama, Serge Aurier and Davinson Sanchez, will also not be travelling. Eric Dier is undergoing rehabilitation from a medical procedure for a problem detected in pre-season assessments and will stay in London.

In May, Rose said that a club interested in signing him in the summer transfer window last year had expressed doubts because he has been open in the past about mental health issues. He said at the time “They [the potential buyers] said: ‘The club would like to meet you, just to check that you’re not crazy,’ because of what I’d said and what I’d been through.”

Spurs remain committed to the signing of Fulham 19-year-old Ryan Sessegnon whom they see as a long-term successor to Rose. Sessegnon has always preferred a move to Spurs and with one year remaining on his contract will have to be sold this summer by the Championship club.

Danny Rose will not be forced out of Tottenham despite being left at home for pre-season tour

Danny Rose will not be rushed into finding a new club, despite missing Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season tour of Asia.

Tottenham confirmed this week that Rose, along with Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, would not travel with the rest of the squad “in order to explore prospective opportunities with other clubs.”

England left-back Rose, who is contracted to Spurs until 2021, has not got anything lined up and will not be forced into accepting any offer he is unsure about.

With England’s top clubs yet to make a bid for 29-year-old Rose, who Tottenham value at around £20million, a move abroad is currently rated as the most likely scenario if he leaves this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have been linked with moves for Rose and it is understood the player would be open to going overseas if a major European club comes in for him.

Atletico Madrid considered trying to sign Rose along with Kieran Trippier, who moved to Spain for £20m this week.

But Rose is prepared to start the new season with Spurs if nothing he is attracted to comes up and is making sure he will be fit, despite not being in Asia.

The Premier League transfer window shuts on August 8, but Europe’s clubs can still buy players after that date. Serie A clubs have until August 23, while the transfer windows in Spain, France and Germany shut on September 2.

Tottenham expect to sign left-back Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham before the start of the season and have tied Ben Davies to a new contract, which means they could still sell Rose after the Premier League deadline passes.

Asked about Rose’s absence from the tour and his future, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “Danny is still our player and of course for different reasons Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen they deal with the club, with Daniel the issues to take a little bit of time to fix different problems but personal problems that they need to sort.

“After ten days after we play Man United and Juventus when we come back to London if they are there, they are going to be in a normal way with the team.”

Asked about his future ahead of his summer break, Rose said: “If I’m back at Tottenham next season, great, if I’m not – great. I don’t know what the future holds now, but I’m looking forward to a break.

“It’s not about regular first-team football. I know my age and I know how the club’s run in terms of if you get to a certain age they might look to ship you on. I’ll be just sitting tight over the next few weeks and just seeing what happens. Either way, I’m prepared for whatever happens.”

Danny Rose returns to Tottenham squad for Audi Cup pre-season tournament

Danny Rose has returned to the Tottenham Hotspur squad for the Audi Cup pre-season tournament in Munich after failing to secure a move away from the club.

Left-back Rose was left out of the tour of China in order to try to find a new club, but Spurs are yet to agree a deal for the England international.

Rose has, therefore, been restored to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s travelling party with under two weeks of the transfer window remaining.

It means Tottenham will contest the Audi Cup with three players who had been expected to leave and only one new signing, midfielder Tanguay Ndombele.

Chairman Daniel Levy broke the club’s transfer record to sign Ndombele for £55million, but supporters are still waiting for the summer evolution Pochettino insisted was needed at the back end of last season.

Kieran Trippier left in a £20m move to Atletico Madrid, but Rose, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld are still at Tottenham and part of the squad that will play Real Madrid on Tuesday night at the Allianz Arena and either Bayern Munich or Fenerbahce on Wednesday night.

Rose will not be pushed out of Spurs and will only leave for what he believes is the right move for him.

With interest in the Premier League limited, Tottenham’s best chance of selling Rose might be abroad with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Atletico all having shown an interest in the 29-year-old.

Levy still has a lot of work to do over the final 10 days of the transfer window, with Spurs still chasing Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon and midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. Talks have also been held with Juventus over an ambitious move for Paulo Dybala.

Other than Trippier, back-up striker Fernando Llorente has also left Tottenham although there remains a chance he could return on a reduced terms contract.

Pochettino has insisted he is happy with his squad, but he could theoretically argue that it is currently weaker than it was at the start of last season.

That, of course, could still change but the inclusion of Rose in the Audi Cup squad has only further underlined the lack of progress the club have made in the transfer market in terms of sales and signings.

Eric Dier, who did not travel to China after requiring surgery, is still out while Serge Aurier has undergone surgery to a hand injury he suffered while on duty with the Ivory Coast.

That leaves Pochettino with Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth as his two options at right-back and Foyth is suspended for the start of the Premier League season.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has returned to the Tottenham squad after recovering from tonsillitis.
