Fifa: Michel Platini to announce presidency bid

BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent Uefa president Michel Platini will announce later this week he wants to be the next president of Fifa.

The BBC has learned that Platini - after receiving indications of support from four continental confederations - will be a candidate when the poll is held on 26 February next year.

The 60-year-old former France international midfielder could declare as early as Wednesday.

Swiss Sepp Blatter, 79, has been in charge of Fifa since 1998.

He is standing down in February as a result of a corruption crisis at world football's governing body.

And Platini is the overwhelming favourite to replace him.

Along with the backing of his own European confederation he is understood to have gained support from South America (Conmebol), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf) and, significantly, Asia (AFC).

If every football association within those confederations voted for Platini he would secure 144 votes - more than enough to be elected as Blatter's successor.

That however is unlikely to happen - given some football associations will back rival candidates or abstain. However, Platini would still be expecting to poll a significant number of votes.

The election is due to be held in Zurich at an emergency congress attended by the Fifa member associations. Candidates have until 26 October to be nominated.

Meanwhile, Fifa's reform taskforce is leaderless more than a week after being announced.

The governing body said on Monday that an independent person from outside football is being sought to chair the group.

It is thought the confederations and Fifa are now suggesting possible names but there is no indication on when a decision could be made.

Fifa wants the group to report its finding by the end of September.

Michel Platini has announced that he will run for the FIFA presidency.

The UEFA chief has confirmed his candidacy to replace outgoing FIFA boss Sepp Blatter, who will leave his position in February next year.

Platini has written to all 209 member associations of FIFA to inform them of his intentions to stand.

"There are times in life when you have to take your destiny into your own hands," the 60-year-old said in the letter.

"I am at one of those decisive moments, at a juncture in my life and in events that are shaping the future of FIFA.

"This was a very personal, carefully considered decision, one in which I weighed up the future of football alongside my own future. I was also guided by the esteem, support and encouragement  that many of you have shown me."

Blatter has announced he is to step down on February 26 following the recent crisis which has engulfed FIFA.

Platini, who has been president of UEFA since 2007 and a member of the FIFA executive committee since 2002, added in his letter: "During this last half-century or so, FIFA has only had two presidents.

"This extreme stability is something of a paradox in a world that has experienced radical upheavals and in a sport that has undergone considerable economic change.

"However, recent events force the supreme governing body of world football to turn over a new leaf and rethink its governance."

Candidatures must be submitted by October 26, with the election taking place at an extraordinary FIFA congress in Zurich on February 26 next year.

In his letter Platini added: "I am counting on your support and our common love of football so that, together, we can give the tens of millions of football fans the FIFA that they want: a FIFA that is exemplary, united and shows solidarity, a FIFA that is respected, liked and of the people."

南韓人鄭夢準 宣佈出選FIFA主席



南韓人鄭夢準宣佈，有意競逐國際足協（FIFA）主席，更直指同樣希望競選的柏天尼並不適合這個職位。

鄭夢準曾經是FIFA副主席，他今月初曾表示，在一個非歐洲人領導下，可以為國際足球帶來新風氣。鄭夢準在《BBC》一個節目上表示，認為自己有很好的機會當選，更直指柏天尼並不適合做FIFA主席：「是時候由一個非歐洲人去帶領FIFA了，FIFA在白禮達帶領下，成為了一個封閉的組織。如果我當選，我的工作並非在辦公室享受豪華生活，而是去作出改變。」

鄭夢準曾任南韓足總會長是2002年日韓世盃組織委員會委員長，南韓在當屆賽事，先出人意料地擊敗意大利，再「爆冷」淘汰西班牙，繼而得到了殿軍。
