Odion Ighalo: Manchester United sign Nigeria striker on loan until end of season

Manchester United have signed former Watford striker Odion Ighalo from Shanghai Shenhua on loan until the end of the season.

The deal to bring the 30-year-old Nigeria international to Old Trafford contains no option to buy.

Ighalo, who is still in China but is expected to fly to the UK in the next few days, scored 39 goals in 99 matches for Watford between 2014 and 2017.

"Odion is an experienced player," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he's staying with us.

"A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here."

Ighalo moved to the Chinese Super League in 2017, first with Changchun Yatai. After two seasons he moved to Shanghai Shenhua and has scored 10 times in 19 games.

His form for his country has been eye-catching, finishing as top scorer in African Cup of Nations qualifying with seven goals, before scoring five at the tournament during the summer.

It is understood there was interest from other Premier League clubs but Ighalo wanted to play for United.

He is United's first senior loan signing since Radamel Falcao's arrival from Monaco in 2014.

Earlier on Friday, United ended interest in Bournemouth's Josh King but did sign Southend United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop for an undisclosed fee.

United accept Ighalo does not fit the club's policy of trying to sign long-term targets, such as Bruno Fernandes, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

However, this move has been done to cover the short-term injury to Marcus Rashford and they could not go the rest of the season without bringing in a replacement.

England international Rashford, 22, is out with a stress fracture in his back sustained after coming on as a substitute during the FA Cup third-round replay win against Wolves on 15 January.

Back in 2015 after Watford's promotion from the Championship, Ighalo was asked where he was most looking forward to playing in his first Premier League season.

No hesitation: "Old Trafford. It'll be a dream come true to play against Manchester United, the team I supported in my youth". Little did he know what would happen almost five years later.

Odion does a huge amount of charity work for people in Nigeria and he's also still a very talented striker.

It's a left-field move by United and I'm also sure that you'll have read and heard all the negatives so to balance things out let me give you some positives: Ighalo is a natural number nine and a natural goalscorer with pace and power.

Barcelona tried to sign him just 12 months ago because they wanted that type of player. He turned them down.

He is a very strong character, too. The Nigerian got a lot of criticism back home after missing chances when the Super Eagles were knocked out by Argentina at the last World Cup (including abuse aimed at his family) but he came back stronger to finish top scorer not only in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying but also at the tournament itself, ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez.

Ighalo's proven in the Premier League and will be able to hit the ground running, fitness permitting.

He'll also be a very popular team-mate who will give his all to be a success at United. Nobody will work harder.

It's almost like a homecoming, too, as Ighalo's family has been based in Manchester.

It's a fairytale move for the United fan from Lagos. Now let's see if, not for the first time in his career, he can prove the doubters wrong.

'He's a boyhood fan'

Fifteen years after football fans witnessed the collapse of John Mikel Obi's transfer to Manchester United, Nigerians will finally get a chance to see one their own become a Red Devil. At 30, Odion Ighalo becomes the first Super Eagle to move to Old Trafford.

Born in a poverty-stricken Lagos ghetto, Ajegunle, Ighalo is a boyhood fan of United. He watched on TV as his striking favourites Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole helped them to the treble in 1999.

Fans in his West African nation closely follow the Premier League, which recruit some of the continent's best players.

Manchester United has a huge fan base in Nigeria and many believe Ighalo will be a success at Old Trafford having retired from international football on a high in 2019.

Ighalo finished as top scorer at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before calling time on his international career at the end of the tournament in Egypt.

He produced seven goals to finish top scorer in the qualifying and his five goals and one assist helped Nigeria finish third last summer.

Many expected him to fade away in Asia after leaving Watford for Chinese Super League (CSL) club Changchun Yatai. But his pace, instinctive finish and ability to find space has helped him to relative success in China

Ighalo finished as the 2018 CSL's second-top scorer with 21 goals and despite an injury-hit season he scored 10 goals in 17 appearances for new club Shanghai Shenhua in 2019, helping them to FA Cup success.

Barcelona to sign Francisco Trincao from Braga & Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras



Barcelona say they have agreed to sign forward Francisco Trincao from Braga for 31m euros (£26m).

The 20-year-old will join the Spanish club on 1 July until the end of the 2025 season and his contract has a 500m euro buy-out clause.

Portugal Under-21 international Trincao made his debut in his country's top-flight in January 2019.

He has made 11 league appearances for Braga this season, scoring twice and managing two assists.

Later on Friday, Barcelona announced the signing of 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras for an initial fee of seven million euros (£5.8m) with three million euros (£2.5m) in add-ons.

He will join on 1 July on a five-year deal with a 300m euro (£251m) release clause.

Fernandes has scored once in 11 matches since joining Brazilian side Palmeiras from Botafogo last year and he has represented Brazil's under-17 and under-20 sides.

Jarrod Bowen: West Ham sign forward from Hull on five-and-a-half year deal

West Ham have completed the signing of forward Jarrod Bowen from Championship club Hull City in a £20m-plus deal.

The 23-year-old, who scored 16 goals this season for Hull, has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at the London Stadium.

He scored 54 goals in 131 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers, who he joined from Hereford United in 2014.

"We are delighted to welcome Jarrod to West Ham. I think he could be a big success," said manager David Moyes.

"He's probably what you'd call a wide forward these days, or perhaps an old-fashioned inside-right. He has played a couple of games as a second centre forward or as a number 10.

"When you score goals like he does, and in the numbers he does, in the Championship, it will give you a great chance of scoring goals in the Premier League. We were attracted to the goals he has scored over the years; not just in one year, but over the last three years."

Sheffield United: Richairo Zivkovic and Panagiotis Retsos join on loan



Sheffield United have signed Dutch forward Richairo Zivkovic and Greece defender Panagiotis Retsos on loan.

Zivkovic, 23, arrives on a six-month deal from Chinese club Changchun Yatai.

Retsos, 21, will also remain until end of the season after arriving at Bramall Lane from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

The Blades, eighth in the Premier League table, have strengthened their squad with five signings during the January window.

Club record signing Sander Berge arrived on Thursday, with Jack Rodwell and Jack Robinson joining earlier in the month.

Zivkovic, who could join the Blades permanently in the summer, reached double figures for goals while in China, with Wilder adding: "People will recognise we do sometimes go left field with our signings, but we've worked very hard on this one, because we have had to.

"We know enough about him, we've kept tabs on Richairo for a while and tracked his progress.

"He is a Dutch international at ages under the senior level. He'll be unpredictable to other teams, but we know what we're getting and he wants to make the most of the opportunity.

"We're learning all the time this season, but pace in the Premier League is key and Richairo is someone we think can kick us on."

As for Retsos, who was born in South Africa to Greek parents, Wilder added: "He is young, talented and one that we've had our eye on for quite a while.

"He wants to prove himself in the Premier League and this initial loan spells is a perfect opportunity for him to have a look at us and us to have a good look at him."

Leverkusen managing sports director Rudi Voller said Retsos had returned to fitness after a long injury.

"It's just really important for him to play and Sheffield United can offer him one of the highest levels to come back into his top form," he added.

Sheffield United midfielder Mark Duffy has been recalled from his loan spell at Championship side Stoke City.

He will now join Dutch club ADO Den Haag on loan, where Alan Pardew is in charge.

Borja Baston: Aston Villa sign striker from Swansea in free transfer

Aston Villa have signed striker Borja Baston from Swansea City on a free transfer.

Borja, a £15.5m signing from Atletico Madrid in 2016, has struggled for game-time this season and was allowed to leave Swansea because of his wages.

The 27-year-old's Liberty Stadium contract was due to expire this summer.

Borja started the campaign by scoring five goals in five matches but lost his place in Steve Cooper's side in the autumn.

The Spaniard, who also had loan spells at Malaga and Alaves, forms part of a move by Villa manager Dean Smith to strengthen his attacking options.

Smith has also signed striker Mbwana Samatta from Genk for £8.5m during the January transfer window, after record signing Wesley suffered a knee injury in Villa's win over Burnley earlier this month.

Ryan Bennett: Wolves defender joins Leicester for rest of season

Leicester have signed defender Ryan Bennett on loan from Wolves for the rest of the season.

The Foxes had hoped to bolster their options in central defence and it is understood the deal includes an option to make Bennett's move permanent.

Bennett, 29, has started seven league games for Wolves this season and joins a Leicester side third in the table.

"The manager has taken the team to another level and the players deserve great credit too," said Bennett.

"It's a massive club and the league table doesn't lie. It's great to be here."

Bennett will not be available to Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers for Saturday's Premier League fixture with Chelsea at King Power Stadium.

His move was confirmed minutes before Leicester's Croatian centre-back Filip Benkovic, 22, secured a loan move to Bristol City until the end of the season.

Manchester United complete shock loan signing of Odion Ighalo

Manchester United have pulled off the remarkable last-minute loan signing of Odion Ighalo on a frantic transfer deadline day on which Ole Gunnar Solskjær became ever more desperate to sign a replacement centre-forward.

In one of the more memorable winter window deals the 30-year-old joined until the end of the season from China’s Shanghai Shenhua. The deal will not include an option to buy.

Ighalo has two seasons of Premier League experience, having played for Watford between 2014 and 2017, and is an established Nigeria international. In his first season at Vicarage Road he scored 20 goals in 35 Championship matches, before managing 16 in 55 top-flight appearances in the following campaigns.

Yet the signing of a forward who has played in Chinese football for the past three years is a surprise, with the manager Solskjær forced to act due to Marcus Rashford’s long-term back injury. This left him with only Anthony Martial and the 18-year-old Mason Greenwood as frontline No 9s.

Ighalo earns a basic of at least £200,000 a week, though how much of the salary United will have to source is unclear. Despite China’s coronavirus crisis, the striker is expected to travel to Manchester in the coming days to bolster United’s forward ranks.

At the start of the day Solskjær believed a permanent deal or loan for Bournemouth’s Joshua King could be achieved.

United had an initial offer for the 28-year-old turned down but were given reason to believe an increased bid could succeed when Eddie Howe said morning that, much as he did not want to lose King, the decision on whether to sell was not in his hands.

Bournemouth’s manager also indicated that King, who was with United as a youngster but made only one first-team appearance, was keen to return to Old Trafford.

“It’s not my call at the end of the day,” Howe said. “It’s going to be between the chief executive and the owner of the football club and that’s why I said at the start I don’t want to go too deep into it because a lot of these things are out of my control.

“All I can say is I love Josh as a player and a person. I respect him greatly and I know his situation – I know what Manchester United means to him with his history connected to the club. So I understand his position. Let’s wait and see.”

Yet as Bournemouth were unable to find a suitable replacement if they were to allow King to leave the deal fell through. The Norwegian is one of only three senior strikers at Bournemouth, with Dominic Solanke and Callum Wilson the others.

On Thursday United did sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon. Solskjær, asked why the midfielder was not bought in summer, said: “It’s about timings, priorities and also valuation, money.”

Solskjær confirmed Fernandes would be in Saturday’s squad for the visit of Wolves.
