Aston Villa to sign Valencia midfielder Carles Gil for £3.25m



Randy Lerner has moved to assist beleaguered manager Paul Lambert by paying £3.25million for Valencia midfielder Carles Gil.

Aston Villa expect to complete the signing of the 22-year-old in the next 48 hours in a deal which represents another show of support for Lambert from his chairman.

Lambert has been determined to add more creativity to his struggling squad and ‎sees Gil as a vital addition.

Gil, who has spent two seasons on loan at Elche, is poised to agree a five-year deal and will fly to England for a medical on Monday.

The Spain under-21 international could make his debut against Liverpool this weekend.

Villa's bid to sign Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair is hanging in the balance, however, after the Premier League champions demanded a £4million transfer fee.

Sinclair will also have to take a pay cut from his £50,000 a week salary and the whole package is out of Villa's reach at this stage.

But the capture of Gil is clearly a vote of confidence for Lambert, who spoke with Lerner after the 1-0 defeat at bottom club Leicester City on Saturday.

Lambert endured further chants from his dismissal and is facing a crucial few weeks with games against Liverpool, Bournemouth in the FA Cup, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Aston Villa target Carles Gil has flown to Birmingham to complete a medical ahead of a £3.25m move, Sky sources tell us.

The 22-year-old midfielder has made eight appearances for Valencia this season but looks set for a move to the Premier League.

Aston Villa are set to sign Valencia attacking midfielder Carles Gil for £3.2m.

Manager Paul Lambert has been a long-term admirer of the Spain Under-21 international, who has scored one goal in eight La Liga games this season.

If the deal goes through as expected, Gil, 22, is likely to start against Liverpool on Saturday.

Villa have struggled to score all season, and have fired just 11 goals in 21 Premier League games.

BBC Sport's Pat Murphy said: "Gil arrives with the reputation of a player who can go past opposition players swiftly in the area where Villa are blatantly deficient - the final third of the field."

Lambert's side are without a win in six Premier League games - scoring just one goal in that period - and are three points clear of the bottom three.

Speaking after Saturday's defeat at Leicester, Lambert, who has also been linked with a Manchester City's Scott Sinclair, said: "We need a bit more creativity, that's the only thing that is lacking from us."

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Spain U21 midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia for a reported fee in the region of £3.2m.

Gil, 22, who can play on either flank or behind the strikers, has signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Villa Park.

The move had hit a late snag over agents' fees on Tuesday but Villa confirmed their first January capture by late afternoon.

Gil is a product of the youth system at Valencia, his home city, and made his senior debut for their B team in 2009 as a 17-year-old.

He was loaned to Valencian neighbours Elche for two seasons, helping them secure promotion to La Liga in 2012/13, and then helping the club stay in Spain's top-flight alongside his new Villa team-mate Carlos Sanchez the following term.

He played 11 times for Los Che this season, scoring once.

"We've been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side," said manager Lambert.

"He's only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don't think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well.

"He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him."

Gil also expressed his excitement at joining Villa and revealed he was determined to make his mark in the Premier League.

"Once I knew that this club was interested in me I wanted to join," he said. "I am really looking forward to playing here and showing the fans what I can do.

"I can play on either side or in the middle of midfield and I like playing as part of the team, making things happen for my team-mates.

"This is a very historic club in England, a very important club in the Premier League, and I am looking forward to playing for such a great club in a league that is the top league in the world."
