Luke Shaw could be out for three weeks as Manchester United's injury crisis worsens

Luke Shaw could be facing three weeks out with ankle ligament damage.

The England international went over on his left ankle early on in Saturday's victory over Arsenal and was forced off after 16 minutes.

He left the Emirates on crutches wearing a protective boot. The subsequent swelling and bruising has delayed the 19-year-old's scan which will give a clearer picture of how serious the injury is.

However, initial concerns are that he is facing a couple of weeks at least on the sidelines.

Despite Shaw's injury, United defender Reece James is poised to join Rotherham United on loan.

The 21-year-old impressed at left back during the club's summer tour of USA but Louis van Gaal is prepared to allow James out to gain more experience.

James is expected to be joined at the New York Stadium by former United team-mate Tom Lawrence who has failed to make an impression at Leicester City since his summer transfer.

Rotherham, who are third from bottom in the Championship, have allowed full back Richard Brindley to join Scunthorpe on loan until January.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw could miss the rest of the year after being ruled out for at least a month with an ankle injury.

Shaw has suffered another injury setback at Old Trafford and scans have revealed the England international may even miss six week‎s in another shattering blow for manager Louis van Gaal.

The 19-year-old suffered ligament damage in United's 2-1 victory at Arsenal on Saturday and left the Emirates Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

And the £27million summer signing fears he is set to miss out on United's Christmas programme as United's defensive injury crisis deepens.

Van Gaal is already without Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Rafael, plus Holland international Daley Blind, and the loss of Shaw is another headache for the United manager.

The teenager missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury and this latest problem could ensure he does not play again until January.

However, United's squad is set to be boosted by the return of Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans, despite the defender saying he was not ready for first-team action, for Saturday's game with Hull‎ City.
