Mark Hughes is close to signing Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi in a deal worth a potential £7million.

Hughes, the Stoke manager, has finally struck a breakthrough in his pursuit of the Morocco international and could complete the signing before the weekend.

Stoke had been deterred by Liverpool's strict transfer fee but are close to agreeing a fee which will see them pay an initial £4.5million.

Hughes had turned to Norwich winger Nathan Redmond after growing frustrated in his attempt

to bring Assaidi back to the Britannia Stadium, with the Championship club turning down a £3.5million bid.

But negotiations over Assaidi have resumed over the past 48 hours and Hughes expects to permanently sign the winger,

who impressed on loan last season. Assaidi, 25, will become Stoke's fifth signing of the summer.

Stoke are holding talks with Liverpool about the permanent signing of winger Oussama Assaidi, Sky sources understand.

The Moroccan spent last season on loan at Stoke, scoring five goals in 25 appearances, and manager Mark Hughes is hoping to bring him back to the Britannia Stadium.

Reports suggested that Liverpool’s original valuation was too high for the Potters,

but they are thought to have agreed a fee in the region of £4.5m which could eventually rise to £7m.

Stoke were also linked with Norwich’s Nathan Redmond as they searched for new widemen following the departures of Matty Etherington, Jermaine Pennant and Michael Kightly.

Speaking earlier this month, Hughes said: "We are still looking. We have strengthened defensively, in midfield and up front,

so the wide areas is somewhere we have to address, with letting Matty go and not knowing about Ossie.

"It's fair to say we have to look to try to bring a bit more strength into that area."

Assaidi could become Stoke's fifth summer signing following the arrivals of striker Mame Biram Diouf, midfielder Steve Sidwell, and defenders Phil Bardsley and Dionatan Teixeira.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes insists he has not given up on his bid to sign Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi.

The 25-year-old Morocco international spent last season on loan at the Britannia Stadium and Hughes is keen to bring the winger back on a permanent deal.

Liverpool's initial asking price of £7million was perceived to be a stumbling block

and then reports emerged over the weekend that the player's wage demands - it was suggested he was asking for £45,000-a-week - were an issue.

However, Hughes remains hopeful an agreement can be reached.

"It's on-going and these things happen. Everybody knows we are interested and that is still the case," said Hughes.

Assaidi made 25 appearances for the Potters last season and scored five goals.

He joined Liverpool from Dutch club Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012 but has yet to start a Premier League game for the Reds.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has revealed his hopes of landing Oussama Assaidi on a permanent basis have "gone cold".

Liverpool striker Assaidi spent all of last season on loan with the Potters, scoring five goals in 25 appearances.

"It's common knowledge Ozzie is somebody we would like to bring into the club, but at the moment that deal has gone cold," Hughes told Stoke City Player.

"He is one we have chased for a while now, but there hasn't been any real movement on that front,

so we will just have to wait and see what the situation is with regards to that deal."
