Arsenal have agreed a fee with Basel for Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

It is understood that all is left is for Arsenal to agree personal terms and for Elneny to undergo a medical and the deal could be announced within days of the January window being open for business.

The fee is believed to be in the region of £5m and it is also likely to be the only deal Arsenal do in the January window.

Egyptian midfielder Elneny fits the profile perfectly because he is good value, he has good energy and has impressed with good performances to help Basel go top of the Swiss League.

But Elneny is not a classic holding midfielder and can be an asset to the squad in the long term without being a short term fix while Francis Coquelin out injured.

Elneny can do a similar job to Mathieu Flamini who - like Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky - are out of contract at the end of the season and are set to leave on free transfers next summer.

They will still go for a bigger deal next summer with Southampton’s Victor Wanyama their No1 target as a holding midfielder.

But Southampton do not want to sell in January and will demand in excess of £20m which may put Arsenal off.

They have looked at Sevilla’s Grzegorz Krychowiak in the past but, again, the price has always put them off.

The Polish midfielder has even hired English agents to get him a deal and Arsenal have told them no go.

But the signing of Elneny is a perfect option as it bridges the gap and allows them time to get a big deal done in the summer.

It is believed Wenger will not do a striker because Wenger believes he has depth in the squad and would again rather wait for the summer.

Arsenal have looked at Dynamo Moscow striker Aleksandr Kokorin in the summer but could not agree a deal.

Arsenal are in talks with FC Basel about signing their central midfielder Mohamed Elneny.
The 23-year-old Egypt international joined the Swiss club in 2013 and has won the league title in each of his three seasons there.
The fee would reportedly be in the region of £5m  and Elneny would require a work permit.
He is eligible to play in the Champions League after Basel failed to qualify for this year's group stage.
Elneny featured in Basel's home victory over Chelsea in the 2013-14 competition.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen in central midfield after Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla suffered serious knee injuries, while Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta have also had spells on the sidelines.
However, Elneny is seen by Wenger as a long-term part of the squad and not merely a stop-gap, were he to join the north Londoners.

Arsenal are close to completing the signing of Mohamed Elneny from Basel, according to Sky sources.

The Gunners are understood to have agreed a fee of £7m with the Swiss Super League-leaders.

Elneny - an Egypt international with 36 caps - still needs to complete a medical and get international clearance before his transfer to the Emirates can be finalised.

Manager Arsene Wenger revealed after his side's 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday that he intended to make at least one signing in the winter transfer window.

"Ideally, I would like first our injuries to come back. After that, I think at least one," Wenger told Sky Sports.

"We still have players with a lack of experience in midfield like Calum Chambers, Alex Iwobi, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, and Joseph Willock. They can all play.

"But at the moment, because there is so much at stake, it is very difficult to get the young players to start, but they have the quality."

Elneny began his career as a youth with El Ahly before turning senior with El Mokawloon in 2010.

He moved to Basel in 2013 and has made over 100 appearances and scored seven goals.
