Baulk (Balk): 猶豫
eg: It was a beautiful necklace, but I baulked at the high price.


Taboo: 禁忌的
eg: Sex is a taboo subject among Chinese people.

Macabre(adj): 可怕的, 恐怖的
unpleasant and strange because connected with death and frightening things
eg: a macabre tale/joke/ritual


meagre(adj): 貧乏的
small in quantity and poor in quality
eg: a meagre diet of bread and water
She supplements her meagre income by cleaning at night.


feat(noun): 技藝, 武藝, 功績, 業績, 英勇事跡 an action or piece of work that needs skill, strength or courage
eg: The tunnel is a brilliant feat of engineering.


fraught(adj): 充滿 (不愉快事物的)
eg: a situation fraught with danger/difficulty/problems

Vindicate: 1.證實 2. 辯解

to squint(v): 瞇著眼看 to look at something with your eyes partly closed.
eg: The bright sun makes me squint.


to alleviate(v, formal): 減輕, 緩和 to make something unpleasant less severe; to ease
eg: The government is trying to come up with measures to alleviate unemployment problems.


to stand(v): 忍受 to bear, to tolerate, to put up with
eg: His singing is awful. I can't stand it.


to entitle(v): 給予權利 to have the right to have something or do something
eg: This card entitles you to a 10 per cent discount.


decapitate(v): 殺頭, 斬首 to cut off sb's head
eg: His decapitated body was found floating in a canal.


machete(n): 大刀, 大砍刀 a broad heavy knife used as a cutting tool and as a weapon

blunder(n/v): 愚蠢 (或粗心) 的錯誤 a stupid or careless mistake
eg: to make a terrible blunder

to indulge(v): 縱容 to do something enjoyable
eg: I got a big bonus, so I'm going to indulge myself with a meal at a top restaurant.


deprivation(n): 剝奪, 短缺 a situation when you don't have what you need
eg: A lot of people nowadays suffer from sleep deprivation which can lead to health problems.

courteous (adj): polite, showing respect 有禮貌的, 客氣的

eg: A courteous young man
eg: The hotel staff are friendly and courteous

righteous (adj):

1. morally right and good 公正的, 正直的, 正當的

eg: a righteous God

2. that you think is acceptable or fair from a moral point of view
公平合理的, 正義的

eg: righteous anger/indignation/rage

beverage (n) (formal) 除水以外的飲料

any type of drink except water

eg: Iaws governing the sale of alcoholic beverages

outrage (n/v)

1. a strong feeling of shock and anger 憤怒; 義憤; 憤慨
eg: The judge's remarks caused public outrage.


2. an act or event that is violent, cruel or very wrong and that shocks people or makes them very angry. 暴行; 駭人聽聞的事
eg: No one has yet claimed responsibility for this latest bomb outrage.

spouse (noun) (formal or law) 配偶

a husband or wife

eg: Fill in your spouse's name here.

cohabit (verb) (formal) 同居

to live together and have a sexual relationship without being married

eg: She refused to cohabit with him before the wedding.

unprecedented (adj) 前所未有的; 空前的; 沒有先例的

that has never happened because it changes a lot or depends on too many different things

eg: unprecedented levels of unemployment

depict (verb) (rather formal)

1. to show an image of sb/sth in a picture 描繪, 描畫
eg: a painting depicting the Virgin and Child

2. to describe sth in words, or give an impression of sth in words or with a picture 描寫, 描述, 刻畫
eg: The novel depicts French society in the 1930s.

refute (verb) (formal)

1. to prove that sth is wrong 駁斥, 批駁
eg: to refute an argument/a theory
syn: rebut

2. to say that sth is not true or fair 反駁, 否認
eg: she refutes any suggestion that she behaved unprofessionally.
syn: deny
