Schuster Blasts Ref
Bernd Schuster could not resist having a dig at the referee following his side's win in the Madrid derby, claiming his side should have won 5-1...
Any neutral observer of the Madrid derby would agree that the refereeing was disastrous at best, so for once, Bernd Schuster's now customary anti-refereeing rant is almost justified. Still, there was no shortage of vitriol when the German coach spoke to reporters after the game.
Discussing the various flashpoints during the game, Schuster exclaimed, "We have proven on many occasions that we are capable of scoring goals in the last minute, but we had our doubts because in the second half, it seemed as though the referee was on a mission to ensure Atletico either tied or won the game. If it wasn't for him, we would have won 5-1."
Schuster was far from finished, going on to state that " The sending off of Van Nistelrooy was clearly a case of balancing out the expulsion of Perea, even though the first one was justified. We were controlling the game and were the only team that looked like winning, but that decision gave Atletico a lifeline."
He went on to praise his team's fighting spirit, emphasizing the point that the game is not over until the referee blows his final whistle. Finally, he praised the home support, describing them as a "12th man." Continuing, Schuster said, "I was worried about the crowd, because I knew the home team relies on them, so it was important to silence them with the goal in the first minute."
The result sent Real Madrid into second place, depending on Sunday's results.
