Mesut Ozil: My preference is to stay, says Arsenal midfielder

Mesut Ozil says he wants to stay at Arsenal and will discuss his future with the club after a pre-season tour of Australia and China.

The midfielder, 28, is under contract with Arsenal until 2018 but speculation over his future has been widespread.

"It is definitely my preference to stay," the German said on Wednesday.

"Once everyone is back in London, we will sit down and discuss the future. I have always said that I feel very good at Arsenal."

Arsenal face Sydney FC on Thursday (11:00 BST) and Western Sydney Wanderers (11:00 BST) on Saturday before heading to China for two further games.

Arsene Wenger's side meet Bayern Munich (12:20 BST) on 19 July in Shanghai and Chelsea (12:40 BST) on 22 July in Beijing before returning to England.

"For now the most important thing is our pre-season and getting through the tour, training and getting fitness," added Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for £42.4m in 2013.

Arsenal are increasingly hopeful they will be able to reach agreement on a new contract with Mesut Ozil, writes John Cross in Beijing.

There have been more positive talks and signs of a breakthrough in negotiations which have been boosted by Ozil himself saying he wants to stay.

Ozil has been locked in a contract stand-off for months as he has been demanding £350,000-a-week, while Arsenal have offered £280,000-a-week.

But the 28-year-old has not drawn the same level of interest as Alexis Sanchez, who also has one year left. Arsenal are facing a major dilemma over the Chilean striker's future, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain both keen.

As Ozil came back happy after the summer break and has been a hugely popular figure on the club’s pre-season tour to Australia and now China, there is a hope the two parties will be able to reach an agreement.

Arsenal will be anxious to put the matter to bed, because as matters stand Ozil can sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January 1 and would be a more attractive proposition as a free agent.

There is a greater concern over Sanchez, who is demanding £400,000-a-week to re-sign.

Although there is no sign of a breakthrough, manager Arsene Wenger insists he will not be sold this summer.

That saga is expected to drag on into August and if Arsenal get a huge offer of above £50m then it could be difficult to resist, rather than risk losing him on a free next summer.

The club will be anxious to resolve Sanchez’s future before doing anything on fellow striker Olivier Giroud, who has been a target for Borussia Dortmund and Everton.

Meanwhile, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud were ruled out of the friendly against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, which Arsenal won 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Sead Kolasinac was also forced off before half-time after being sick.
Arsene Wenger thought it was food poisoning but the club's medical team have since said it was a stomach bug unconnected to anything they have eaten.
Arsenal flew to Beijing from Shanghai on Thursday for the final leg of their four-match tour and a game against Chelsea in the Bird's Nest Stadium on Saturday.

The agent of Mesut Ozil has claimed that talks over extending the German playmaker’s contract at Arsenal are now progressively positively, despite the seemingly interminable nature of negotiations.

Discussions began well over a year ago about a contract that expires next summer when Ozil’s status was higher in the team but now, with his client having played only seven minutes in the club’s last six unbeaten games, Dr Erkut Sogut has made more encouraging noises.

"Ozil wants to play another two to three years in the Premier League,” he said. "Our contacts with Arsenal continue and are going in a positive way."

It is believed that Arsenal made offers approaching £300,000-a-week for Ozil to extend his deal previously but, with his form having wavered and the team in good form without him recently, there must be some doubt over whether the club would still be willing to commit such a large chunk of their budget to him.

Manager Arsene Wenger has always had huge faith in Ozil and, although he has generally started him even after dispensing with the specialist No.10 role in his new 3-4-2-1 system, there is now increased competition for only three attacking places.

Arsenal are ready to try to find a January buyer for Mesut Ozil.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already admitted publicly they may be forced to sell Alexis Sanchez and Ozil in the next window rather than lose them for free.


But they will actually try to drive a deal for Ozil as they have effectively given up hope on him signing a new deal.

There is also growing disenchantment with Ozil’s attitude and recent performances, particularly after Saturday’s defeat at Watford.

Arsenal have offered Ozil £275,000-a-week but the player’s representatives have demanded £350,000-a-week and comments from his camp last week that talks had been going well have been met with some bemusement.

The problem that Arsenal have is that Manchester City are keen on Sanchez but there has been a lack of interest in Ozil.

Inter Milan have publicly admitted they are keen and that is why they are now actively looking round for a buyer.

Arsenal have produced good results without Ozil and his introduction at Watford was the signal for them to blow a lead and lose at Vicarage Road.

His lack of intensity and enthusiasm has privately infuriated the dressing room and his days now appear to be numbered.
