Steve McClaren: Newcastle decision expected within 48 hours

Steve McClaren remains in charge of Newcastle United, with a board decision on his St James' Park future expected in the next 48 hours.

McClaren, under pressure with the Magpies 19th in the Premier League, took training as scheduled on Tuesday.

The board - minus the ex-England boss - met away from Tyneside on Monday.

Newcastle are in danger of a second relegation in seven years after five defeats in six league games, including Saturday's 3-1 loss to Bournemouth.

On Monday, managing director Lee Charnley, chief scout Graham Carr and club ambassador Bob Moncur discussed possible ways forward with 10 games of the season remaining.

McClaren took over in the summer after leaving Championship side Derby but has only won six of his 28 top-flight matches in charge.

Former club owner Sir John Hall claimed the 54-year-old should be sacked, while Alan Shearer, Newcastle's record goalscorer, has described the club as a "mess from top to bottom."

The NUFC Fans' Forum - a representative body of supporters' groups - has called for action to be taken to arrest Newcastle's slump in an open letter to the club's hierarchy.

Steve McClaren is waiting to be sacked at Newcastle United as the club sound out replacements – with Rafa Benitez at the top of their shortlist.
Sportsmail understands the former Real Madrid boss has been spoken about in depth by the club’s board and they will use intermediaries to gauge his interest.
Benitez is back in the UK at his Wirral family home following his sacking at the Bernabeu in January and, like he did at Chelsea in 2012, could be willing to sign an interim deal until the end of the season, especially as the Magpies are in serious danger of being relegated.

McClaren, meanwhile, remains in the dark over his future. He took training on Tuesday having been left out of a secret board meeting in York on Monday.
He is frustrated that managing director Lee Charnley has given him no indication over what his fate may be, but he expects to be sacked before Monday’s trip to Leicester City.
David Moyes and Brendan Rodgers are alternatives to replace McClaren should the interest in Benitez fail to progress beyond the early stages.
