Smudge Collects Carling Prize ALAN Smith was presented with his Newcastle United Carling Player of the Month Award for August before skippering the Magpies to Saturday's 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle at St.James' Park.

The blonde-haired midfielder scooped a massive 51% of the votes as he beat off competition from Shola Ameobi, Kevin Nolan, Steve Harper and Jose Enrqiue for the prize.

Alan's trophy was presented pitchside by lucky fan Michael Wall from North Shields who voted for the United star at www.carling.com
The Newcastle United Carling Player of the Month awards see Fairs Cup legend Bob Moncur and Evening Chronicle football writer Lee Ryder shortlist five players every month for the award.
