Friedrich's contract cancelled
Germany international hopes to regain full fitness and find new club

Wolfsburg have complied with the request of injury-plagued defender Arne Friedrich and ended his contract.

The 32-year-old's contract was meant to run until 2013 and had played just 15 of the 40 games that he was available for.

Friedrich signed for the club last year but a series of injuries and a back operation forced him to miss large chunks of the last campaign and the start of this one.

Coach Felix Magath lamented the Germany international's decision but was powerless to help him change his mind.

"He came to us asking to end his contract," said Magath. "We regret this and wish him all the best in the future."

Friedrich has won 82 caps for the national team and his news will come as a further blow to Wolfsburg who have struggled this season and are 14th in the table.

Rock-bottom Hamburg sack Oenning

Hamburg coach Michael Oenning has been sacked by the club less than 24 hours after being given a vote of confidence by sporting director Frank Arnesen.

Oenning suffered his fourth successive defeat as Hamburg lost 1-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, a result that left the club languishing at the foot of the Bundesliga.

But despite the poor start to the season, Arnesen publicly backed Oenning on Sunday, saying: "We have a game against Stuttgart on Friday and Michael Oenning will be sitting with me and the team in the plane on the way to Stuttgart and on the way back again."

A day after receiving that vote of confidence, though, Oenning finds himself unemployed.

The former Nurnberg boss was promoted from assistant to manager at Hamburg after the dismissal of Armin Veh in March, but the poor start to the 2011-12 campaign has seen Oenning become the Rothosen's sixth managerial casualty in just over three years.

Former Hamburg midfielder Rodolfo Esteban Cardoso, who has been involved with the club in a coaching capacity since 2005, takes will take the reins on a caretaker basis.
