Arsenal move for Julian Draxler as Arsene Wenger looks to make last-ditch signings
Arsene Wenger targeting Schalke's German midfielder as Real Madrid offer Gunners Brazilian forward Kaka
Julian Draxler is next on Arsenal's list (Christof Koepsel) Arsene Wenger has made a desperate last-ditch move to sign German wonderkid Julian Draxler.Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis was at the club’s training ground yesterday trying to seal a deal which would ease the pressure on manager Wenger before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday.Wenger has major reservations about the price but Arsenal have made contact with Draxler’s club Schalke and are believed to be willing to pay around £40m, although the German club are demanding an astonishing £60m.Arsenal have also been offered Real Madrid’s veteran Brazilian Kaka as they look at deals to thwart a fan revolt because they have yet to spend a penny and have so far spent NOTHING in the transfer window. It is understood that Arsenal’s interest in Yohan Cabaye has now ended after they told Newcastle they will not pay more than £12m.Newcastle are now left with a player who is desperate to leave - but Arsenal no longer want him especially after signing Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer this week. However, Arsenal are desperate to get a big deal done and Draxler is a long-term target. Mirror Sport reported last season that Arsenal scouts had been watching him.Ironically, Draxler was given a new two year contract at the end of last season to fend off interest and Schalke general manager Horst Heldt this week insisted they would only listen to offers for £60m. Will Kaka soon belong to Arsenal? (Getty) Schalke yesterday signed midfielder Kevin Prince-Boateng from AC Milan and there is a hope that Arsenal can get the deal over the line in what would be a sensational swoop.Draxler, 19, is an attacking midfielder and Arsenal are pushing hard as Gazidis is desperate for Wenger to dip into the club’s £70m-plus transfer kitty.Mirror Sport revealed yesterday that there is a growing fear at the club that Wenger will not spend a penny, having only signed Mathieu Flamini and Yaya Sanogo on frees.Wenger has been dithering on Draxler but Arsenal are keen to pull off a deal yet there still remains a fear they could miss out altogether.Arsenal remain in the market and hope that they can do business on Draxler while they are also hoping that Real Madrid trio Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria become available if Gareth Bale gets completed this weekend. There are still internal wranglings about Draxler but Kaka, 31, has given them food for thought even though he seems an unlikely signing for Wenger. But Kaka is desperate to leave Real Madrid in search of regular football. But it would appear that the pressure from the boardroom and the terraces is forcing Wenger’s hand and they are keen to do at least one big deal.
