Leonidas da Silva Google Doodle remembers footballer's 100th birthdayThe inventor of the bicycle kick is remembered with a sketch featuring his signature technique
The 100th birthday of Brazilian footballer Leonidas da Silva has been remembered today with a Google Doodle featuring his famous "bicycle kick". The player, who was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 6 1913, is widely thought of as
one of the most important players in the first half of the 20th century, and
earned himself the nicknames of "Black Diamond" and "Rubber Man" because of his elasticity. Leonidas began his club career in the 1930s, playing for sides including Sao Cristovao, Bonsucesso, Batafogo, Flamengo, and Sao Paulo.
He also played in two world cups for Brazil - one in 1934 and one 1938 - and was the top goal scorer in the 1938 tournament.
Leonidas was known for
being the inventor of the "Bicycle Kick", using it for the first time on April 24 1932 in a Bonsucesso match against Carioca. He most famously used it in 1948 during Sao Paulo's 8-0 victory over Juventus, when the kick and goal were captured on camera,
and it is this that
today's Google Doodle pays tribute too with the letters "o" and "g" replaced by sketches of the player kicking the ball over his head. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/leonidas-da-silva-google-doodle-2254956?tabPane=Comments [ 此帖被羅力亞在2013-09-06 16:15重新編輯 ]
