Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Cardiff City manager leaves post

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stepped down after less than nine months in charge.

The announcement was made after Solskjaer, 41, held talks with chairman Mehmet Dalman.

The Bluebirds are 17th in the Championship after three losses in seven games, including Tuesday's 1-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough and a 4-2 capitulation against Norwich.

Veteran defender Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young are in temporary charge.

Before the announcement was made, BBC Scotland learned Dundee boss Paul Hartley, 37, had rejected the possibility of succeeding Solskjaer.

Welshman Tony Pulis is the favourite with most bookmakers, but the 56-year-old former Crystal Palace and Stoke boss told the BBC he has not been approached.

Solskjaer succeeded Malky Mackay on 2 January 2014, with Cardiff 17th in the Premier League, only one point clear of the relegation zone.

But the Norwegian could not steer them away from trouble, and they were relegated on 3 May after a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Former Molde coach Solskjaer and Dalman both cited a "difference in philosophy" for the former Manchester United striker's departure.

Owner Vincent Tan said: "Ole was hired by Cardiff City on our understanding and belief that he would help us fight relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

"After the club was relegated, many people advised me to let him go, but I decided to keep Ole on for the Championship season.

"Regrettably our recent results do not justify Ole's continued role as manager at Cardiff."

Tan described Solskjaer as an "honest and hard-working professional" but added: "Unfortunately the football results were not in his favour."

Solskjaer said: "I want to thank Vincent for giving me the opportunity to manage Cardiff City.

"He has my full respect and I really wish him all the best in his pursuit of making this football club successful."

After the defeat by Middlesbrough, Solskjaer took the blame for the club's poor run of form.

"I should get better results than we've had in the first seven games," he said, after his side were booed off the pitch at half-time and full-time.

Former Bluebirds captain Jason Perry told BBC Radio Wales the board and Tan had to take some responsibility.

"It was the wrong appointment for Cardiff and the wrong club for Solskjaer," said Perry ahead of the Norwegian's departure.

"If you're manager or a coach you have a central strategy and you work on that. But he's still trying to find his first 11 and you can't do it, it doesn't work.

"The table tells you that, the results tell you that and unfortunately Cardiff thought he was the right man for the job and I want to know why."

Championship news: Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to leave club

Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears set to leave the club on Thursday following talks over his future in London, Sky sources understand.

Tuesday night’s 1-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough,

their second at the Cardiff City Stadium in the space of four days, left the club struggling in 17th spot in the Sky Bet Championship.

The talks in London on Wednesday were said to be amicable

but the Norwegian is unlikely to remain in the post, with City owner Vincent Tan keen to oversee a swift return to the Premier League.

The former Manchester United striker failed to keep the club in the top-flight last season,

despite taking over from Malky Mackay on January 2 with the club 17th in the division, just outside the relegation places.

The 41-year-old has signed 14 players since his appointment, including nine in the latest transfer window,

but has guided Cardiff to just nine wins in 30 matches in charge and has secured a single point from their last four league games.

Solskjaer took responsibility for his side's poor start to the season after the Boro defeat, saying: "I'm responsible and I should get better results than this."

But it looks as though he will not get the opportunity to help improve their form, with his eight-month tenure apparently drawing to a close.

CARDIFF CITY APPOINT RUSSELL SLADE AS FIRST TEAM MANAGER

PUBLISHED

18:20 6th October 2014

Cardiff City Football Club are pleased to confirm Russell Slade as First Team Manager, following his appointment by Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

Speaking of the appointment, Tan Sri Vincent Tan said, “I’m delighted to appoint Russell Slade as the Manager of Cardiff City. I have personally offered Russell this opportunity after giving much thought to the needs of the Club at this point in time and firmly believe that he is the right person for the job. I have spoken to many knowledgeable people in the game about Russell, and the feedback has been extremely positive. He is clearly well liked and respected, particularly by his former Chairman, Mr Barry Hearn, who could not speak more highly of him, both as a person and as a manager.

“The stability, integrity and experience that he brings is something I feel is essential for Cardiff City. He is capable of turning a group of players into an organised, tight-knit team, with great team spirit, who will work hard for each other while playing an attractive style of football. I want to give this honest, committed and hardworking man the opportunity to manage our talented players and I am convinced, with God’s blessing, Russell can succeed now that he has been given his first opportunity to manage at a higher level.

“I ask that our supporters offer him a chance to prove his long term value to our club, giving him and his players their full support as we try to earn our place in the Premier League under his guidance. Look at Russell’s track record.  He certainly deserves to be given a chance. After all, Cardiff gave a chance to a mediocre manager from Watford and he took the Club to the Premier League.  I did however give him a lot of money to spend for that – in fact, too much money.

“This is an important appointment for me because Russell has the right values for the Club and our supporters. I hope he will be able to bring the best out of our squad, and also help to unite everyone associated with the Club. So, let’s all give Russell a chance.”

Cardiff City Chairman Mehmet Dalman said, “I would like to welcome Russell and wish him every success as Manager of Cardiff City. I would also like to thank Scott Young, Danny Gabbidon and their team for stepping in to take the team over the last few weeks. Both are highly and rightfully respected at Cardiff City and will be given the opportunity to work with Russell to progress their own coaching careers.”

Russell Slade said, “I’m grateful to Vincent for giving me this opportunity as Cardiff City is a fantastic Football Club. We have a large squad and it’s more than putting out the best eleven players on paper. We need the best group of players out there with the right balance and chemistry. It’s now about building a relationship with the players and installing a strong ethos and work ethic. That’s what I want us to take onto the pitch every week.”
