Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is re-elected Last Updated: 18/07/15 11:22pm
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been elected to continue in his position for another six years after Saturday’s election. Bartomeu beat off the challenge of former incumbent Joan Laporta, who held the post at the Catalan club from 2003 to 2010. Barcelona said on its television channel that Bartomeu received 54.63 percent of the votes cast by club members. The 52-year-old has endured a turbulent spell at the helm having taken over in January 2014 from Sandro Rosell, who stood down following the Neymar transfer scandal. Barcelona signed the Brazil international in 2013, but an investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds is ongoing by a magistrate, and Bartomeu is a suspect, while Rosell swiftly quit his post.
Despite a transfer embargo imposed by FIFA over signing youth players, which ends in January next year, Bartomeu decided to stand for re-election.
His caused was helped by Barca's victory in the Champions League along with triumphs in La Liga and the King's Cup last season.
